I have a fresh installation of Arcanum, patched with latest patch then UAP on Windows Vista 64 bit.

Once I install the high resolution pack, no matter what options or what resolution I choose, the floating dialogue text, like Virgil's introduction at the beginning, never appears. I only hear the voiceover.

However, on my laptop, Windows Vista 32 bit, everything works fine.

Has anyone else with Windows Vista 64 bit had this problem too?

    Thanks for any advice :)

EDIT: I tried running it with -no3d and it _did_ make the dialogue text appear, however the game ran extremely slow and unplayable. This may shine some more light on the issue.

Does the dialog text appear if you run the game without the resolution patch? Are you using the larger dialog font?

I don't have Windows Vista and can't test the patch on it, however, if the vanilla Arcanum runs without any problems, then there should be no issues with the resolution patch, as it doesn't introduce any drastic changes in the rendering code.

Most of the issues with Windows Vista are covered in this thread. Please read it thoroughly.

I've also changed the topic title to make it more clear.

The dialogue text does reappear if I uninstall the resolution patch. Then it will disappear again if I reinstall it with any options, no matter the resolution, large dialogue font, etc.

I did notice during one test that there was a single line at the end of one dialogue paragraph that I could see, but it was only the bottom half of the letters that came through. Like there was some overlay problem.

Likewise, when I use the cursor with the resolution patch, it 'covers' up anything in the square of it's graphic 'box', not just on the outline of the cursor itself. Get what I mean?

Thanks for the attention Drog, and all your work :) I'm enjoying the game a lot on my laptop if anything :)

    Solved!

I had Anti Aliasing and Anisotropic Filtering enabled in the ATI Catalyst Control Center... forgot to uncheck those.

Woohoo now I get to graduate from a 12" screen to a 24" screen :)
