    Salutations to everyone,
    I am new here.
I have a trouble: when I enter the sewers in Caladon, in Tarant or even the Hall of Records in Tarant (who is underground too) the game freezes: no music, I can move the mouse but if do so, the image begin to repeat has a pattern-like picture.
I have to recover the Vendigroth thing, but I need to go down the temple at Caladon for going on and I can't.

I have several saved games before this point, but the most shows the same error. Just some of them at the very beginning (level 10) are working. Now I am level 42 I have done almost every single quest and I have the maximum number of followers... so, don't tell me to restart it again, I have no power for it.
I have tried to load my saved game with the PC of a friend of mine (who had arcanum already installed) and they yet not work, while the saved games from my friend work on my PC! So I guess it is not an installation trouble. (We have the same patch 1.0.7.4 and no other strange things installed, both XP sp2 and so on...)

Does anyone know about this bug? Is there a saved game editor that could boost my level 10 saved game to my actual level 42 context (by allowing me to recover all the followers and the quests I have done)?
Is there a patch/fix for this awful bug?

    Thank you for reading,
Any suggestion is more than appreciated!

I've never heard of this bug before, but if your savegame is broken your best bet would probably be to restart. Since you don't want to restart though, I wouldn't rule out reinstalling as an opportunity, if I were you. As you said that is likely not the problem though if it generates the same error on your friends computer.

Are you playing a legitimate copy of the game?

While you are raising a legit question, I am curious of what caused you to ask it. Did I miss something in his post?

I used the original CD of that friend. And I would have bought it, but no shop here is selling it any longer and even in that case, I would have never heard of it before going to my friend's house.
I love the story, I love the freedom one gets with it, I ADORE the background, simply genial.
But when I took it, my friend said that after playing it he would have never bought it again, because of the poor graphic (I agree but don't care of graphic), and the bugs in it.
And now I have understood the reason for its last sentence: enjoy it, until you can do it... :(

I've never ever gotten a bug that caused me to restart or reinstall or anything like that. ...I'm not sure I've ever had a bug at all! And I played several years unpatched too.

Have you installed the "new"est patch? 1074?

I thought I read something along those lines, but when I skimmed through the post again I must've missed it.

I think the windows XP service pack 2 is the problem. It always is.

I thank everyone for the help, but I am quite depressed because I think there is no way to fix this bug.
As I had written I had the last patch and NO other hacker-like stuff installed.
I doubt that WinXP with sp2 is the problem because my friend completed the game with the same OS and just some "minor" bugs. Yet HIS saved games on MY pc are working, while MY saved games on HIS pc yet don't work.
I think there should have been some trouble in the game, maybe sometimes I have alt-tabbed while saving, or maybe I have activated some graphic option while doing some strange action in the game. But everything was fine so I can't understand the exact point when this happened. I continued to saved and overwrite with time some saved games (even if I am used to leave some anti-bug saved game, you know... I played a lot of RPG, I am not new with this kind of "surprise") but the bug showed only when I arrived to the Caladon sewers, and it seems it was too late.
I don't think I am starting it right now, I simply have not time to restart, my only hope was finding a way to mod the saved game and "fake" the underground main quest in Caladon, so I could have keeped playing, but it is sci-fi thinking of opening the saved game with notepad and find the right exadecimal string to add....

    Anyway, thank again to everyone.
And this game rocks, the Black Isle Studios and the Troika have always done great RPG with wonderful backgrounds and plots. Too bad they have stopped now... I don't like useless games such as NeverWinter Nights 1, let them to the xbox ps fans.

Just a curiosity: did you know that there has really been a "challenge" between two different engines? The Stirling engine (air engine) was more efficient than the Steam engine, but at the end the Steam won because it was simpler to build and less frail in its work. 1800s were a great time for physicists! :)

You could finish the game without going to the Caladon sewers.

If you go to Stringy Pete, and kill him, you can take his boat and go to Thanathos. That way you skip a few, well a lot of main quests.

Yeah, but that's so much easier said than done if you're under a certain level when you go for it.
If it's your first playthrough, Boltzmann, then I'd advise against it, even if you're "big" enough.
