Forgive me if this has already been addressed, but I'm having trouble running this game and it's UI. I use Vista 64-bit Premium, and the entire process of getting Arcanum to work at all has been a struggle. I didn't use the discs (I made rips; I just don't like running games with discs, it's loud) and had to get a noCD patch, if that makes a difference. After changing the compatibility mode to XP and adding the High-Res patch (can't install UAP for some reason), it works --- but most of the UI is missing.

I managed to "fix" that by running Arcanum in Safe Mode, but Safe Mode runs dismally slow. Is there a way to rectify this problem without having to use Safe Mode?

Here's a screenshot of what it looks like, if that helps any:

    EDIT:
Slight and unimportant issue - changes I make with a character editor I downloaded don't seem to appear in-game.

You're using the 'fullscreen' mode. That's a bit of a misnomer as fullscreen just means a smaller interface - just run the normal .exe

The UAP includes a no-cd patch IIRC so you may want to try and get that installed (might mean reverting to the original exe/reinstalling) - make sure you install the latest official patch (1074) first.. Vista/7 also includes 'User Account Control' (UAC), a useless piece of crap that aims to improve security by forcing you to confirm that you want to do every niggling thing twice. I say useless as it's really a backwards approach - no one should be using an administrator account for everyday tasks but as it's the default approach by microsoft very few people realise this and so UAC was implemented.

You can either disable UAC in the control panel or go into the compatability tab and check 'run as administrator' for arcanum.exe.

Otherwise I'm not sure why the UAP isn't installing - is the installer giving you an error message or crashing?

If it seems to be installing fine it could be a virtualStore issue (though I've never had any trouble). Vista and up dislike direct writing to the C: drive (fair enough), and instead add a virtualization layer that resides in the users Application Data directory. It's meant to be completely transparent, though but if you're having issues browse to C:\Users\<UserName>\AppData\Microsoft\ and look for an Arcanum directory; if it exists copy the entire contents to the actual folder where you install it otherwise you could be encountering the same bug I did*. I'm pulling that path from memory as I don't have a windows machine at the moment so it could be wrong.

(* A couple months back I attempted to install rroyo's AWIP, and although all the files where in the correct place none of the content bar the backgrounds were accesable in game. I was using Windows 7 64bit at the time and was never able to find a solution. There should be a heap more files in the arcanum directory such as Drog's Clean Cache.bat and various patch files if the installer did work)

First of all: thank you so much! That "fullscreen" was bothering me to no end. It's been a while since I've played Arcanum unfortunately.

Second: It would appear UAP didn't install because of the noCD fix I applied. I re-installed from the ground-up, added the official patch, and UAP installed flawlessly. :)

    Heh, anytime. Enjoy the game!

You are most likely correct about the noCD patch, all of them (except mini-images, which are another story) modify the executable or a library in order to remove copy protection schemes... The UAP does this as well (as does the high-res patch although it's done at runtime instead), so of course the results are a little unexpected when the .exe isn't the same size and hence the offsets are changed!

It's not a bad idea to back up the original exe in the folder before doing anything for this very reason.
