    And you are right that the language of Lotr and other of Tolkiens works has a language that is a bit dry and factual. Looking at his work now a days, I find it hard to believe that I actually read them when I was 12.

    And Douglas Adams, yes, who can't read his work and not love him for it?

    Other good ones are Philip Pullman, Dan Brown and Robert Jordan, among others.

    I think he only wrote one or two sci-fi's. Most of his stuff is historical fiction.
