You don't get much older than that...

I'm only a year Darkfool's senior; which means I get all the joys of alcohol and none of the pesky hiding it from police, unless I'm driving.

Yep, 21 in America. Though right now there is a lot of talk and debates going on to lower it back down to 18. Which, honestly, it should be.

It's 18 in most countries since that's when you're considered a legal adult, plus it's when an individual can make the decision to fight and die for their country. If they can make that sort of decision they should be able to decide if they want a beer or wine or some other drink with their dinner without it being illegal.

The strange thing about where I'm from, is that when you become eighteen, you can drive, drink and it's when you take your final exams from school.

They're just encouraging people to drive drunk to their exams!

Yeah, I was watching this show once where the woman said

"I don't understand that I'm not old enough to drink or smoke, but I'm old enough to take it up the ass by two guys in front of a camera."

And that was about as deeply thought-provoking as I ever got watching porn.

True. When I was in the service, you could drink on base in the Officer/Enlisted clubs, bowling allies, etc. as long as you were 18+ and had your Military ID. I think that's changed though. About the time Mrs. Clinton took away the ability of military personnel to get free over-the-counter meds from the post pharmacy. Limited supply, of course, and you had to sign out for it. That way you couldn’t stock pile 28 boxes of Tylenol, etc.

I’ve never thought about this aspect before, but I defiantly agree. Besides, that’s an awesome and hysterical quote.

It’s been awhile, but that would be the ‘learner’s permit’, correct? Valid only if you're with a fully licensed driver. Or do they have another category now with other restrictions?

Here in Ireland he means. The law changed recently, it used to be that while on a provisional, you could drive whenever you wanted, except for some major motorways. I think Ireland was the only country where you could fail your driving test and drive home! But now they've changed it so that you have to have a fully-licensed driver in the car with you.

    Ah. Okay. Interesting information.

I'll have to work harder on remembering that this is basically an international, semi-English speaking board.

('semi-English' not taking a poke at the ESL folks, but more at those of us where it's our primary language and we still manage to fuck it up.

I've never agreed with drinking laws here in the states, though I'll admit that the age restrictions allowed it to be illegal for me for a longer period of time. Simply because it used to be illegal for me is why I drank. When I turned 21 I got over it really quick, that and since I tell embarrassing stories about myself when I'm drunk.

Different cultures have different approaches. As you said Gross, most teenage Americans just drink because it's illegal, whereas in France, or so I'm told, they don't drink to get drunk and the drinking age is sixteen. They just have a couple of beers and be on their way. But here in Ireland, we drink to get hammered. I don't understand people that drink just to stick the two fingers up to the law, or not to get drunk. When I drink, I drink to get plastered and have a good time, end of story!

Aye, drinking's the way to make all these boring parties become interesting... in many ways. Having not enough alcohol to go with is one of the greatest party-killers I know of.

It's not any kind of party without drink! Drink is what makes the fun! I never used to decide what I was going to do on a particular night, as a friend of mine said "We'll get drunk, then we'll decide what to do!

You guys must have disastrously poor social skills. Drinking makes parties better/funnier, yes, but parties shouldn't be fucking dependent on booze.

I guess it's because you're from Britain. It's a bit like that with teenagers over here as well, but that's because we're too close to Russia.

Not really. My attitude is "Yeah, it'll be fun, but imagine how much more fun it'd be if we were drunk!"

Ireland isn't part of Britian, except for the north, though they are very much the same in most ways. Except the bus services in London are a lot better than over here and it seems to me that the accents are more extreme.

I'm from Poland, it's pretty much a tradition here to get wasted on any occasion. The lack of an occasion being a good enough reason to get drunk anyway.

Also, you must've got the wrong impression - drinking isn't about making parties better, it's what most parties are about altogether.

I've tried a couple of times to have a sober party - a RPG session, a LAN party, I even tried once not to initiate heavy driking on a birthsday party - all these went down in history as a waste of time.
