I'm sorry, but no. I think my grandad, or something else, who lived in Austria, changed name from Echsmidt to Makowsky, for some reason. It's quite strange, since our family has nothing to do with Russia, or Poland for that matter. At least nothing we're aware about.

 

So, it's extremely possible that your grandfather, on a whim, made your last name up, only for it to actually mean something?
