So, I was thinking of putting together a document, and so I need ideas. When you think of what a Gentleman was/is, what do you think a modern gentleman is? Ideas/bullets/thoughts/anything would be appreciated. I'm going to take down the few things I think of now, and re-write them into a more elaborate piece, and then figure out what to do with it.

A gentleman is always courteous to those he meets and converses with, even if they are he worst kind of bounder.

A gentleman is kind and chivalrous to the more delicate sex, and treats them with the utmost care. (Gah...)

A gentleman does not cheat or lie.

A gentleman acts to avoid conflict, and when violence is inescapable, he acts to secure his victory quickly and cleanly.

A gentleman always attempts to look his best, and dresses smartly and conservatively, without giving mind to the ever-changing vagarities of 'fashion'.

A gentleman is never, ever coarse, vulgar or rude, regardless of circumstances.

A gentleman remains composed and calm when all about him is in chaos.

(There you go. A lady always does her utmost to help a gentleman when he requests it.)

Read "Gentlemanners: Contemporary Guide to Common Courtesy". I try to abide by it - a very nice guide (Although sometimes it gets too formal. Perfect for you Arcanum'ers/Steampunkers though). I do lose it sometimes though. :-?

A Gentleman refuses to profess to weak stereotypical beliefs, and instead strives for equality between genders. The tragedy is that he will never truly be a gentleman if he thinks he's a Gentleman.

A gentleman is someone who always tries to make sure that the people around him are as comfortable as possible.

One of my favorite movies. If I had to choose my own death it would be riding a atomic bomb waving a cowboy hat.

Or by choking on the worlds rarest truffle.

But the truffle might pollute your precious bodily fluids! That's the biggest communist threat, you know.

    ... my boyfriend :)

According to him, a gentleman thinks less of himself than those around him (especially those who are dear to him), but has the confidence in his abilities to protect them when necessary. It is a way of life, not a manner of behaviour, and to be a gentleman is to dedicate yourself to being one.

    Anonymous quote:
"A gentleman remembers a lady's birthday, but forgets her age."

I believe that a gentlemen in these days, is quite simply a man who doesnt try to sleep with a girl on their first date. I think a gentleman should court the young lady (or man. These days even those of a somewhat "male anus orientated" attitude can still be considered a gentlemen). After sufficient courting, the gentlemen should have his wirely way with the partner in a dignified manner. None of this, 10 thrusts and then im done kind of behaviour, he should have the attitude of "This meal looks wonderful. I think i shall take my time and enjoy it fully." Perhaps he should even take the womans feelings into account! Crazier thing have happend I'm sure.

Anyway, thats what I believe a gentlemen of this day and age is/should be.
Of course, way back when, all you needed was a sufficient amount of estate, and you would be a gentlemen. You could be as corrupt and disgusting as you wished! Those were the days of the gentlemen in my opinion.

That would mean that you, perhaps, are the only person besides my fine (s)elf that understands the glory that was the Swedish Empire.

Xz becries it, of course, but that I sincerely believe that Northern Europe would have benefitted immensely under Swedish imperial rule.

Northern Europe would have benefited immensely from being a single nation. (On average of course. Norway is doing spelndid on its own.)
As for Swedish rule? We tried that, it didn't work out.

I believe that without the Swedish Empire, the country might have remained poor and un recognised. If that happend, the Sweden we know today might have just been another Montenegro!
If this happend, well we wouldnt have this for a start.

That's not Swedish at all you moron. The fact that you don't know the language is no excuse either, the car is clearly marked with NL.

This is a mislabeled Dutch commercial. Now take your stupid and go away.
