O.K. - Having given myself permanant eyestrain in a vain search for a file that has your basic combat floats in it, would someone be gratious enough to tell me if such a file even exists and what is its name?

Do you mean floats like "Oh jolly good hit!" or do you mean floats like "Critical Hit +200%"?

    The "Jolly Good Hits" type.

From time to time I noticed floats like "You half-elves are all crackers!" and "Time to die, bastard (bitch)!" pop-up. And as I mentioned, to date I have been unable to find the source of those.

Now, granted, all the NPCs have floats built into the dialog, but nothing like I had seen. They seem to be independently generated.

Hope this helps narrow the search.

For generic critters the combat floats are generated from a predefined list. As far as I recall the only list which is available to the user is the greetings code list. All the other lists are hidden away in a format which cannot be accessed anymore.

For unique NPCs the combat floats are taken from the dialogue override script.

If you want to make your own dialogue override scripts then first download the edit docs. The one you are interested in is "GeneratedDialog". There is a table of override numbers at the bottom.

If you have a look at Virgil's scripts then you will get a good idea of how it is done.
