Anyone know of sites (like hotmail.com) that give you free e-mail addresses? I've had it with my hotmail address. I used it for AGES just as one of those.. Oh! This gaming site wants an e-mail to send me my password... Well here you go... And only ever checked it for that reason.

Now, (after using ot as a contact for Amtut) I am sick and tired of being offered:
    "free diplomas"
"debt reduction strategies" (I'm not in debt, so why do they send this crap to me?)
    "holiday offer"
and "hot young teens bare all"

Well.... Okay.... So maybe the hot young teen things are okay... Except they all want credit card numbers....

So, if anyone knows of some sites that offer free e-mail services... I'd be grateful. I've hunted for some myself but thought there might be one or two 'highly recommended' places that someone might know of.

I get those debt reduction and free diploma spams. They're the only spams I get and I don't know were they come from. Strangely, I don't get them on my hotmail account. Until recently, I didn't get any spam on that account.

You shouldn't have to look far for free e-mail providers. Here's three off the top of my head:

Orrrrr ... you could just register a new Hotmail address. If you're careful with the choices during registration, MS won't spam you.

Orrrrr ... you could fiddle with your junk mail filter on your existing Hotmail account to filter out the debt crapola.

    I highly recommend http://www.dogmail.com

I use it, and have never had a problem with it. It's fast, reliable, and I rarely get spam.

Actually spam usually doesn't come from provider... It's whenever you sign up/register anything, alot of those times they sell/give our your info to anyone. And there are those little spy ware thingies too. There is even that junk protector that homail has but I never got around to use it... I don't think it's gonna help more than erasing letters.

Thanks all. I'll check some of these suggestions out. Incidentally, the reason I'm asking is because The hotmail junk filter really IS crap. It's on low right now because on anything higher and EVERYTHING (even Amtut thankyou letters) get sent to the junkmail folder. As such, I still have to sift through it all...

Also, they have that 'block e-mail address' thing.... But that has a limit of 250 (I found out) and it's no use when everything comes from different addresses like x6247yfd@dodgysite.com

I agree with Ioo though... I only get this crap because I signed up for it.... Some sites ask you for an e-mail address so they can send you a password!! Woohoo! Then they sell the e-mail address and all the phoney details you entered just to sign up to their site  I bet you there's a guy out there now thinking 'DarkUnderlord' is that his REAL name???

    Anyway, thanks all.

Doubtful. There's more likely a computer out there going "0011000011011010011110011001" etc etc etc which translates to "Send DarkUnderlord as much spam as I can per second."

Well, second best would be rule-based filtering.

Not knowing what e-mail client you use, I'm going to go out on a limb and assume it's either web browser, Outlook, or Outlook Express. If by any miracle you are in the tiny percentage of the Internet using Eudora or Pegasus or something similar, please ignore this mail and shoot yourself in the head.

If you're using a web browser, but are on a Windows platform, you should at least have Outlook Express availble to you, and I recommend you start using it.

Hotmail accounts have nice integration with Outlook Express. Just run the Tools/Accounts(mail)/New option and run the wizard. Once you've entered your hotmail address, it does the rest for you.

Once you're on either Outlook or Outlook Express, "rules" become available to you. You can set up rules to filter your mail based upon such things as the sender, recipient, words in the subject, words in the body, etc.

One way of sde stopping spam, that Lysa uses, is to set rules to route known senders/subjects to folders she uses for filing (e.g. she routes anything where the sender = sheriff_fatman@mymailaddy.here to a folder called "ignore").

Everytime you get a new (non-spam) sender, create a rule for it or add it to an existing rule. It's quite quick and painless. This will mean that anything left in your Inbox, not routed to a folder, is spam and can be ignored. Of course, you'll want to run a cursory eye over it every now and then to make sure you're not missing any important ones (like, "YOU MAY HAVE WON A MILLION POUNDS!!!" ).

An alternate rule system is the one I am being forced to put in place. The only spams I get are to do with "Reduce your debt" and similar money/job ones. By going through and picking out key words like "debt" and "finance" and "diploma" I can route all of those to my Spam folder and never have to look at them. I can also set up a rule to periodically clear that folder without me having to go in and see the mess.

That Marksman thing goes a bit too fast.

And Jar, that would translate to 694215924

If you're on a Windows comp, you should be able to use Poodora for work mail and Outlook Express for hotmail.

Please excuse my bigotry. I'm a tech conformist and like to rubbish marginalised apps because my brain has been scrubbed clean by MICROSOFT'S MESSAGE.

I have no idea whether Eudora's support for rules is better, worse or identical to that of Outlook Express. Naturally, it's support for Hotmail will be worse, but that's a family thing.
