phpbb2 (which this forum uses) is now very, very old and even when it was new was oft regarded as one of the most unsecure web apps of the time...

Not saying we should change, but spambots just come with the territory.

I think it's also the third in the last two-three months, so yes, we're getting more of them lately.

I don't understand why they'd try to advertise though, this forum has been declining in activity for a long time.

 

Because posting their ad on countless dead forums is a great way to get them google hits.

 

phpBB3 is much nicer from an admin point of view (the old admin panel is a mess), and you can skin it so it looks very similar in look and feel to phpBB2. But upgrading and switching is a shitload of work with the potential to fuck everything up so I can't say I'd want to do it here at TA.

Actually, I consider this place more active now than it was a year ago myself. Sure, a few old-school members may have left, but if they're gonna leave like pussies (while still most likely coming back to lurk often) then it was probably time for them to move on anyway.

 

Personally I hate phpbb3 just as much as phpbb2.

SMF is probably my favorite forum software (like it more than IPB/vBulletin, actually) - it's easy to use for both admins and users, addons can be installed without being hacked and it's reasonably easy to integrate with other PHP applications thanks to the integration hooks.

Also includes a converter script that'll happily convert a phpbb2 into a SMF one, I've never ever had it fail on me but a database backup isn't exactly complicated to do anyway.

That'd be the go if you wanted to change to something else, only issue would be designing a new theme as they're obviously not compatible.

 

If google hits are all that matter to these things we should be able to undermine their logic. If it's google hits they want, we'll have to make this the very last ad you'd ever want a customer to see.
