So I thought I'd make a thread where people can talk about the favourite character they've made. Obviously it could be your favourite character for a number of reasons, i.e. it was really good at fighting, you role-played it in a peculiar way, you thought the character's role really suited his race, or any combination of these and anything else you can think of. You can post up pictures if you like to show off your character, which I'll be doing. I thought this would be fun because it's always interesting to see the wierd and wonderful characters people can produce when character creation is as versatile as it is with Arcanum. Without further adieu, here's mine:

Hugo Mortimer - Half-Ogre Fist Fighter

The reason why I liked this character was because fist fighting was something I'd never tried before, and it's always cool to beat grizzly bears to death with your bare fists! He was a rare half-ogre birth, which is why I named him how I did, instead of something like Mork Bone Scruncher. Below is his back-story, which you can feel free to skip if you find those sorts of things boring:

Hugo's mother had raised him in the slums, and as a consequence he always wanted better for himself and his mother. He was naturally attracted to technology, and found that given that his ogre heritage had dented his intelligence somewhat therapeutics - which was rumoured to be able to increase intelligence to the farthest reaches of human capability - was a natural choice of study. He, unlike most people in Arcanum who choose to pigeonhole themselves, was also fascinated with magic; particularly with areas where there was no technological analogue such as the Temporal college. As Professor Eakins would in the future remark to him, “Specialisation is for insects and orcs.”

He had to come up with the means to fund his studies at the local university, as a result got involved in a bare-knuckle boxing circuit; after all he felt he would be a fool not to use his other innate advantages to their fullest extent given his lower than average intelligence. Even though his mother was often worried sick about him, he never got too severely injured. It was during one of his fights however, when he had left his mother alone at home, that something terrible happened.

Hugo had seen a lot in the slums, a lot of crime. Though he never partook in any of it himself, he never did anything to stop it. As with most people in that situation, he tried to ignore what was going on around him. When he returned home that night victorious, he found his mother bleeding out on the floor. He asked her what had happened and she told him weakly that they’d been robbed, that she tried to stop the thieves and so they’d beat her into this state. Though Hugo knew something of herbology, it was not enough to save his mother. She died in his arms that night.

From that day on he had changed. No longer could he sit idly by when there was evil and suffering in the world. He chose not to use a weapon in battle, it would serve as a constant reminder of the night he lost his mother so he would never waver from his mission. He travelled to Caladon and booked passage to Tarant on the IFS Zephyr, believing that the university would serve his studies into technology well and also upon hearing tales of the Boil he knew that he could make a difference there. Of course the journey didn’t go as planned…

Other reasons why I liked this character was I liked the dichotomy between acting nobly and yet savagely beating people unconscious, he was an unusual tweak on the overdone half-ogre melee smasher. I tried to play Hugo as fairly as possible, not using any exploits and only going to locations when they come up in the story line; but I did use Velorien's Blessing and the Vivifier to make him that bit more awesome.

Obviously you can see where most of his skill points were spent; though I also got doctorates in therapeutics, herbology, smithy and I put 3 points into electric. I did accidentally waste a point into willpower that I didn’t need to, and I couldn’t get Temporal mastery from being too tech, but apart from those two exceptions everything else panned out as expected. His tech aptitude is actually 100, this is the first time I've notcied the Ring of Brodgar is a location that affects aptitude. I would recommend to anyone to play a character who uses both buff spells and therapeutics, you can save a lot of character points that way; I only used the energizer and revitalizer, but I could have used more if I'd had felt like it. Fist fighting is also an interesting way to fight, as you can see you do a lot of fatigue damage and most enemies you encounter do not have as much fatigue as hit points, allowing you to beat several of a group unconscious and then finish them all off at the end.

So I’ve shown you mine, now you show me yours. Don’t feel like you have to make a post as long as mine, even just a paragraph or so would be great.

That was very hilarious, thanks for sharing! I've still yet to turn Magnus into a hulking mongoloid retard using muscle makers, I always thought that was a fitting fate for him. Hopefully one day I'll get round to it.
