I've heard alot of good stuff about the Fall Out games and thought I'd try and get my hands on some part of the series so I hunted aroubd ye old video stores looking for the games but all I could find was FOT. What do you guys think of FOT, how does it compare to the others. I haven't really played it (only first training) and it looks allright so I don't know anything about it really except from the intro movie. So what's the story and is it any where near an RPG? Oh and any help or advice on getting the games would be a great help.
It doesn't. The only thing FOT has in common with Fallout 1&2 is setting and character development mechanism. Alothough the latter is not entirely true as there are many completely useless skills in FOT. Enough bitching. FOT is simply a tactical squad game, with character development (like UFO). Fallout 1&2 are true RPGs with a great story, a number of paths to choose from and extremely interesting character development.
Damn that's a btich well thanks anyway. My quest continues and you guys could atleast help by not rubbing it in or hyping me up about FO2 so I don't feel bad anymore  Still any suggestions on were I might find FO2? Btw, I think I recognize your sig Dragoon from the installation screen of FOT I know it's edited but who is that guy anyway?
That's PipBoy. PipBoy is the name of your personal computer in Fallout series and also of that funny looking guy. He's in all the skills', traits', perks', etc. descriptions. He's also in the intros in those do/don't movies.
That particular picture, I believe, is for the Kamikaze starting trait. Yes, I've finally laid my filthy paws upon a copy of Fallout 2. Allah be praised, I finally understand why people have been going on so much about this game. 8)
Fallout 2 is good but the story gets kind of jumbled after about half the game. The original Fallout is still the greatest IMO.
hey seadog, go to interplay.com, go to their store, and type fallout in the search box. you can get both FO1 and FO2 for ten bucks american. only drawback? the manuals are on the disc. but hey, that's where i got mine!!
I think FallOut Tactics is really fun. If thats all you can get, play it. But like someone else said it is not like Fallout 1&2.
why is everyone so against tactics games? true, they're not rpg's, but they're not supposed to be. after all, was final fantasy tactics so bad? come on you dorks, try another genre!!!
I thought FOT was OK. If you want a game that completely blows it out of the water and yet remains in the Tactics genre and has similar elements, try Silent Storm.
You know... I was thinking about falluot tactics, and temple of elemental evil, and turn based combat in general, and I saw an article in a magazine called GMR (which I got a free subscription too (lucky me)) that reviewed a cool looking game called "Silent Storm" or something, and said it is the best turn based combat game out on the market today. This made me kinda think about why people seem to be have been dissapointed in the past in regards to two particular games... (you guessed em!) Fallout Tactics, and ToEE. When we look Fallout Tactics we see a game that branched off from a well regarded RPG series into the realm of tactical turn based combat, and in my opinion it did so very well. Never the less people were dissapointed by the fact that it just wasnt fallout, that it didn't bring back enough of what they liked about fallout 1&2, namely the unique character, and plot dynamics, and non-linear story. People ignored the fact that it was billed as a squad based combat tactics game based in an rpg's world, and complained that it was not RPG-ish enough. Temple of Elemental Evil, on the other hand, uses a turn based combat system that is much less complx, but throws in like 2 towns, and a huge dungeon, and people barely say a word. Despite a mostly weak storyline, the fact that it is billed as an "old school dungeon crawl" is supposed to make up for that somehow. The strong points of this game were definitly dialogue and character creation, to me the combat was an afterthought. The multple introductions, and unique characters got me interested, but the rest of the game was just sort of a really long, really pretty flash in the pan. I dont want to sound too down on the game, it was pretty fun, but it wasnt the engaging combat experience I'd expect from a turn based game, and it wasnt the engaging role playing experience i'd expect from the people who created arcanum. What I'm trying to get at here is that Silent Storm wont gain the mixed reviews and confused opinions people would have about FO: Tactics, or ToEE, but at the same time, it wont have the memorable characters and imagery of the fallout series, (trust me, it wont, silent storm is just a good tactical game with a WW2 face, in a market flooded with ww2 games) and it also wont have the beautiful, and awe inspiring atmosphere of ToEE. What it WILL have is much higher reviews than either of the other two games I discuss. Why? Because it doesnt pretend to be anything else, it IS what it advertised, not some coulda been great, but was just pretty good smattering of cross genre "coulda been the greatest game ever made but wasnt" dissapointment. In conclusion, the next time I see an RPG advertised as an action packed turn based dungeon crawl, I really want it to be action packed. When the fuck are we going to get baldur's gate tactics? Seriously, the whole "i go invisible when i use my stealth ability" thing is starting to piss me off. Fallout Tactics was a great thing. It gave me what I now consider to be what we should expect as the bare minimum when it comes to turn based combat. After the example that that game set, and the simplicity with which it was integrated into what was basically fallout. Aside from the prone, and crouching positions and much more dynamic line of sight, it was basically fallout, with huge combat zones, and full player control over every character. If the remade fallout 2 with this system, and a new graphics engine (or not, i dont really care) it will be the greatest game ever made using using a turn based combat system, but thats not the point of what I'm trying to say. What i want to know is where IS this game, where is the game that fallout 2: tactics could be? Silent Storm should not be the best turn based game out there. It should be FO2: Tactics, and it could have been Temple Of Elemental Evil, but instead we get FO: Brotherhood of Steel. Our favorite game designers really need to get their acts together.
Fallout Tactics is okay. As a tactical action game it's not that bad, but there are some conflicts with the original Fallout games in concept, storyline etc. If you want the full details, ask at RPG Codex. I personally didn't mind it, but I think Jagged Alliance 2 was, and still is, better. I've also heard a fair bit about Silent Storm, and Jinxed seems to really like it, so maybe I'll check it out soon. Sleek, the turn-based system of ToEE is far more complex than that of FOT. All the calculations are done for it behind the scenes, so to speak, and combat never plays out the same way twice. FOT, on the other hand, let's you choose between several different combat modes, and that alone should tip you off to the fact that it's TB mode could not be as complex as that of ToEE's.
I've never heard of Silent Storm and the only good squad based game for WW2 I know of is Hidden & Dangerous 2. Well thank you, it's encouraging to find that some people like FOT so I'll give it a fair shot before throwing it away, but the biggest thank you goes to Rosenshyne for telling me where to get FO1&2. Thank you Rosenshyne!
Silent Storm has some very cool and complex elements that FOT (and indeed no other Tactics game I've ever played) had. For example, you can sacrifice action points in order to make a more precise shot which essentially gives you higher accuracy, but with a higher AP cost. Whats really amazing however, is that you can interact with the environment in a way which neither ToEE or FOT ever came close to. Almost everything in the game can be destroyed, climbed on top of or act as cover. If you think there's an enemy hiding behind a car, you can simply fire at the cars gas tank and the car will explode killing, or at least wounding the guy hiding behind it! Or, say your on the second floor of a house and you hear enemies (There's a system implemented that simulates this.) moving below you. What to do? Well, You can for example throw a small grenade at the floor and blow a hole in it, then lobb a few bigger ones down the hole you just created. This to me is what sets Silent Storm above any other Tactics game I've ever played. Sure, the story is a bit of a cliché. But the engine and combat is amazing which is what I think most people look for in a Tactics game.
Jagged Alliance started this I believe. I could be wrong (maybe it began in the UFO series) but JA certainly implemented it well. Subsequent shots, because you'd already taken aim, cost fewer AP's than the initial shot, but significantly changing your target 'reset' your aim. A nifty feature, to be sure. Admittedly, JA didn't have the destroyable environments, but then again, it's like 6 years old now.
Jarinor: I guess your right about the overall complexity of the two attle systems, and I've actually never played Jagged Alliance 2, (though I've heard a lot about it) but the things I really liked about fallout tactics was basically everything that was cool about the fallout games; called shots, variety in terms of close combat, etc, but there were a few additions that i really liked as well, like standing/crouching/prone positions, and the way they affected line of sight, and stealth etc. I just wish they would take that kind of stuff to the next level in role playing games, just for the sake of more interesting combat, and more realistic sneaking options for thieves etc. That kind of thing could really have made the city areas of say... BG2:SOA (yeah i know you didnt like it, to linear etc) a lot more interesting. I'm just waiting for the day when a game will come out that lets me use a grappling hook to bypass a noble's courtyard wall, lurk in some real time shadows, knock a guard out with a blow gun, and unlock the gates so the rest of my party can follow me. As opposed to picking the lock to the front door and cloaking like a klingon bird of prey instead of acting like a real thief. Seriously though, the various game developers have mastered the implimentation of the DnD magic system, but who cares if you cant scale a wall with you thief, or monk etc? Or have your druid turn into a sparrow and fly over etc.
Hidden & Dangerous to is like that a bit. You get your black op guy to hop in the back of a truck and sneak into a castle, and sneak around killing people with your knife and putting all the corpses in one room. Of course you can only do that for a little whild before missing people are noticed. Or you can do it properly and steal a uniform and call in the RAF to blow them up but where's the fun in that?
Play any of the Tenchu: Stealth Assassins games. I'm getting Wrath of Heaven as soon as possible. In other words, as soon as I have spare money after buying neccesities such as a black fedora, Microsoft Office, wine, honey mead, and a new CD/DVD-ROM drive.
