That's right, I forgot that the clan you run on B.net is a true cross-section of the gaming community these days. Man, oh man, how could I not know?

Quethim, you break more commonly-held truths about stupidity and ignorance than anyone else I know...

Who do you think writes articles for all the gaming websites out there? Adults. Also, you can't call me stupid when you make claims that because everyone you know on B.net is around 15, therefore everyone who plays games in the USA is 15. Do you think Freedom Force was made for your age group? Fallout? Arcanum? No, these were all made with the adult market online.

How many kids do you see playing MMORPG's? Not as many as adults, and Everquest has 400000 subscribers, the majority of which are adults. That's just Everquest. Doesn't count Ultima Online, Asheron's Call, Dark Age of Camelot, and it won't include World of Warcraft, Earth'n'Beyond, Morrowind or anything like that. That's just the role-playing market as well (which is mostly adults). Move into FPS's, and yes, there are a lot of kids. What about sports games, adventure games and the like though? Again, mostly adults.

Also, I seriously doubt that with your communications skills and posting habits that you will make it as a game programmer someday. You definitely won't make it there if you believe that all games are for kids. Hell, one of the major requirements to become a game programmer, or to work on games, is a PASSION for games - if you don't believe, just read the job ads that get posted. Everyone wants passionate gamers working on their products, because they know it'll turn out better. Blizzard, Interplay, Troika - they all say that.

Do you have a non-spam counter argument?

I know EXACTLY what you mean, and I'm tempted to agree, but I don't.

I think the problem is with society. I know it seems like a bit of a cop out, but I really believe humans need to be trained ... kind of.

To be the type of person who goes out and DOES stuff, you need to BECOME a person who goes out and does stuff, and REMAIN a person who does stuff. This all sounds like a statement of the obvious, I know, but I do have a point (I think).

It seems to me, that (if my experiences and observations are not completely atypical), many people are spending their formative years left to their own devices. Noone asks anything of them, and noone really minds what they get up to as long as it doesn't cause a ruckuss. This is how it was for me.

School doesn't really count. School was easy, even if those of you still in school do not have a broad enough frame of reference currently to realise it. University is even easier.

By the time we reach adulthood and gain official control over our own destinies, the damage has been done. We're habitual recreationalists, with no motivation to achieve, and probably what amounts to an irrational (esteem-based) fear of work. At that point, self-indulgence is a way of life and jobs are just something we grudgingly undertake to earn enough money to get by. If any of us had parents willing to support us, we'd probably not get jobs at all.

If we were trained to be more disciplined and have a healthy attitude to work during our formative years, we'd be much happier in later life.

As it is, we have to train ourselves to work when we're past our formative years. Naturally, this is a lot harder, and made even more difficult by the intangibility of the rewards and constant temptation from plethora of methods for instant gratification.

I agree with Sheriff there, it's so much nicer being an asshole-sun, just raiding the fridge. Once you grow up like that, you just don't feel like doing shit.

I was actually pretty active as a kid - my laziness is 100% natural . I'm not trying to cop out either - I know I'm lazy, and people tell me all the time how lazy I am. I seriously have motivational problems, but that's not because I had a lazy childhood. I played heaps of sports, ran cross-country, but I've always had a tendency to procrastinate, sleep late and not be lazy.

Lately, I've been reversing that sleeping thing, but the others are considerably harder to overcome. I'm not a party person - I don't got out as often as everyone I know, and when I do go out, it's usually by myself or one or two other people. I'm an introvert in a major way.

Hell, I would love to have no responsibilities for the rest of my life, but I know that isn't going to happen. So that's why I'm attending university, so I can get a good job, which I'll hopefully enjoy and make friends at, but, failing that, will fund my hobbies, whatever they are at the time.

I see work as a means to an end - someone starts a business, so they can fund their activities. They employ people to help them, and people apply so they can fund THEIR activities. People need money so that they can have a good time. However, we also need certain services to be made available or provided to us, so we all have to work.

In the end, it comes down to this: We work to provide services, so that we can get money and enjoy the services that others provide us. It's a nice big circle.

STOP IT!!! YOU'RE ALL DRIVING ME NUTS!!!

I've been thinking about this for.... It must be YEARS now...

    Think about these scenarios:
    1. You go online and play a computer game for 2 hours.
    2. You watch TV for 2 hours.
    3. You go for a walk on the beach, by yourself, for 2 hours.
    4. You go to a party, with lots of other people, for 2 hours.
    5. You go to work for 2 hours.

Now, what is the difference between those situations? All of them are essentially the same activity, namely "Entertainment". There is NO fundamental difference. They all occupy your time. Yet, magnify that and change that into a 2 hours per day, every day for a year. Person 1 is classified as "anti-social = bad", person 2 is classified as "anti-social = bad", person 3 is classified as "He likes the beach = good" person 4, no one has any problems with and person 5 becomes a "workaholic = bad" (Okay, presume they're working an EXTRA 2 hours per day, IE: 10 hours per day). Yet, they are all essentially the same in that they occupy time.

I was thinking about this because I spent last weekend down at the family holiday shack by the beach, yet I didn't go for a walk on the beach at all. For four days, without a phone, computer, TV and nothing except books to read and a stereo with bad radio reception, I listened to the radio (Well, I also helped build a shed, but I'm talking about the spare time I had). Now, I thought "Here I am, near the beach, why don't I go for a walk along it?". But I kept thinking that there's no point. Whether I listen to my new CD's for 2 hours, or walk along the beach for 2 hours, there's no fundamental difference. Going out to a party is the same. You're merely occupying the time to save yourself from boredom. Thus, I feel that human beings only real purpose in life is to avoid boredom. Whether that means working, partying, whatever.....

Hmmmm..... I had lots of other stuff to say... But I can't think of it now.

Ok Jar...I said it is not true that 97% of gamers are adults. I know I will play games when I am adults. But the thing is that its not 97% it is more like 60-70%. I know more adults play games because they can aford them. But it is around the same as 13-15 year olds. The average age for game playing is 13-21 and do not get me wrong on that. I have been playing games since I was 4 and I still play games and I will continue playing games for a while. I am just saying that not 97% of gamers are 18 and older. It is more like 97% is in the range of 13-21. And trust me that is the truth.

Why would you trust anyone on the internet. Why would you trust anyone on the internet. You guys do not have to trust me if you do not want to. I am just after all stating my opinion.

    Note the bold-ified sections.

So Quethim is going to be "adults", eh? Is that kind of like Voltron, where you need five of you in one body to kill the bad guy? Have you been running on just Red Lion for a while now?

And if more adults play games than kids, then why is it that in the average is 13-21? Your arguments are mutually exclusive.

Which one is it? Your opinion or the truth?

Quethim, my numbers speak for themselves. Yours do not, mainly because you suggest the demographic range of 13-21, which does not exist anywhere, in any marketing system.

The main demographic money making range in entertainment these days is 18-35. Sorry to burst your bubble over this but games aren't marketed for you and your script kiddy buddies .

Everyone, can we leave Queth alone a while, now? I think 5 or 6 people having a go at him simultaneously for 3 days in a row should be sufficient to get your point across. It hasn't noticeably reduced spam levels, either - his or yours.

I don't agree. While those activities may share a common impetus or aim (stretching my credibility a bit to allow work in there) - recreation/leisure - doing one is not the same as doing another; they all have different effects on the doer.

Going to parties may increase your social circle, or help you feel part of society, as may work (or possibly playing online games). Walking on the beach or listening to music may have a calming effect. Playing computer games may be an outlet for tension.

Clearly, doing most of them to excess will entail some negative aspects. Partying constantly is unhealthy. Working too much (at all) can lead to hypertension. Walking on the beach too long can ... make you fall in the sea.
