A woman is claiming that her son was addicted to EverQuest, and that the addiction was directly related to his suicide.

I say that if you have mental problems (which the guy did), then you can hardly blame someone for getting addicted to something. Anything can become addictive. It all comes down to choice though. There's always a choice.

Also, If the mother of this guy is prepared to step in and sue now, why didn't she take steps earlier? If he had as many mental problems as he did, then he shouldn't have been living alone, and she, as his parent, shouldn't have let him 'abuse' the game. You can't lay the blame here on Sony. Some of the claims the people involved in the case are making are ridiculous. I say, the guy suicided because he was mentally ill, and affected by something, possibly from the game. He was the one who suicided, Sony didn't pressure him to pull the trigger. Blame lies with him, full stop.

What I find odd is how did he get a gun, if he had no life, and virtually no contact with anyone from the outside world?

    Very interesting article, Jar.

After my recent immersion in DAoC, which is similar to EverQuest, I can testify that they are very enthralling, and could take over your life, if you let them. Seems to me, this puts them in the same category as a fairly large number of other things - watching TV, for instance.

    Considering ...

... the guy was a depressive, it doesn't seem like EQ was his problem. For all we know, his time in EQ may have been his only experience of happiness.

People don't kill themselves because of an escapist activity. People over indulge in escapist activities because they can't handle the things that make them want to kill themselves.

Personally, I believe a LOT of people on IRC, people who post in forums and all those who play the MMORPG games for HOURS on end obviously have something wrong with them (Please note, I AM including myself in that list  ). It seems to be the nature of the computer geek. At times you're not sure wether you can say something to someone in jest and then have them kill themselves over it. There are times when you might post your opinion in a post, then the other person goes out and gets all upset and mad and angry and so on.... It becomes a bit of a hit and miss. At times as well, you're not sure whether their "angry" response is just them joking, or they really ARE mad.

Basically, everyone who has a computer and knows how it works seems to have "social" problems

    Needless to say, I agree.

This case is just like some religious fanatics claimed that D&D is evil. (Search Google Groups for "D&D is evil") When will such idiocy end?

If I were to commit suicide, I'll do something I really enjoy before that.

Hmmm. The same mystery. Why on earth will P. Schulyer and Sons kill their customers?

    I couldn't agree more.

I think that woman is an escapist. She can't handle the fact that her son died (and she might be able to prevent that, but didn't), so she blames EQ for that.

All MMORPGs suck. Sorry thats just my opinion. I look for plots and MMORPGs have none. And plus they cost 10 bucks an hour. You know what I realized. The games are rated teen and they cost 10 bucks and most people at the age of 13 to 16 do not have 10 bucks a month. Dont ask me why I just said all of that.

Quethim, you seem to have a strange view of the world. MMORPG's are 10 bucks a month, not a day!

Also, if something requires a credit card, IT ISN'T MEANT FOR PEOPLE LIKE YOU! 97% of the world's gamers are over the age of 18. What does that do for you theory that games are for kids? Are you saying that once you hit the magic age of 18, that you're too old for games? Games, which are made by adults?

If organising society was left up to Quethim, he'd put everyone in nursing homes from the age of birth to 10, and then from 18 till your death.

Thankfully, I never got into MMORPGs. I waste enough time on IRC as it is.

My feelings regarding the whole "MMORPG = Suicide" were summed up perfectly by Fatman when he posted:
It's the easy way out to blame the symptom and not the root cause.

EDIT - I forgot to add that the whole "I'm too young for a credit card" argument doesn't hold water anymore. At least, not here in the US. Go to the bank and open an account. The bank cards now function as debit cards, and they're accepted everywhere that they take Visa, even online. As long as you have dough in the account when it gets billed, then you're all set.

Jar what you said about 97% of the gamers in the world are 18 is not true. But yes I know what you are saying about 18. I know I will be playing games till I am probaly 25 and then I will start making games. But most people that play games in the U.S.A. are 15 or around 15. I have a clan on Battle Net and most of it is 15. So therefore what you said is wrong.

I agree with Jar, its the kid's fault. I spend most of my time on the comp, and while I admit that I am a little wierd, im not ready to kill myself because im adictied to my games.

Yes I know it is the kids fault...you can not blame the death of someone on a game...its not like he used the disk to kill himself..and it is also the parents fault for paying the monthly fee....
