How is it possible that an earthquake occurred today in Ottawa, Canada, an area of North America which has no plate boundaries near by to cause an earthquake. Is there a fault line or something there that could have caused it?

Rock relaxation and uplift from the last Ice Age can cause smaller earthquakes. I'm not familiar with Canadian geology, but old fault line can also react to stress generated at distant boundaries.

I wish I could give a better answer (since this is what I study, more or less), but I know that minor earthquakes has been recorded close to the center of Australia, also far from any active boundaries.

United States Geological Survey is a good source for anything earthquake-related.
