    I know we're not exactly on this topic still, but I've found that the best way to create a smooth image, without all those little white blobs around the edge, is to enlarge the picture so it's huge, then get rid of as many of the white things as possible, and/or smooth the image and to then resize it back down to the required size. This last resize makes all those little white things left so small that they are effectively rendered out of the image - even on a black background.

    That is, somewhat, what I do as well. make the entire background a wierd color, like purple (some color otherwise not on the image), and make all the white pixels purple. I then filter out all the purple to transparent. I did that with FoE's signature:
