    I've only been catheterized twice.
Both times, fortunately, I was unconscious.

I was awake for the removals, but if I have a choice, I'd prefer it to the opposite.

I was under the impression that the comma broke up sets of three numbers (ie: hundreds, thousands, millions), and a period marked the beginning of portions of a whole (ie: $1.05 being one dollar and five cents)...

...or have I completely missed the boat on this one?

Yes DF, that would be the correct way of doing things.

    Entertaining.

    Seriously now:
I believe this pretty much explains it all.

I myself, while using the comma as a decimal seperator, usually use (if any punctation whatsoever) an apostrophe to seperate sets of three numerical digits, since the apostrophe/comma system seems to be a lot less error-prone system than a period/comma or a comma/period one when dealing with my own (and frankly, anyone's) handwriting. Of course someone could argue that an apostrophe/period system would be even less error-prone, but I would tell that theoretical someone him to fuck himself, for he would most propably be right and it would ruin my life.

I like the appearance of the 1,000,000.0 better than 1.000.000,0 .

1'000 just looks silly to me, 1000 is fine since I can count to three. Using a comma as a decimal point is awkward-looking I think.

I don't see whats wrong with using spaces, either. 1 000 000.00 is a lot harder to confuse over 1'000'000.00

Yet it has an undeniable advantage over 1.000/1,000, that when someone says "I've got 3'333 GB of pr0n", your first thought doesn't have to be "Gee, now I have to check what country is that guy from or else I may be mistaken by three orders of magnitude".

That argument wouldn't be futile if people never talked about numbers having more than four or five numerical digits. 1000000000 makes your eyes bleed, while 1'000'000'000 is quite user friendly.

It's pretty much the same thing. I guess kangaroo warning signs on my neighborhood would be awkward-looking for me as well. It all depends on where one was forced to waste his young years.

Waste indeed, due to the shitty school I went to I didn't even know decimals existed until grade 5.

It's still all opinion; in school we were taught not to use anything for separating sets of digits, yet I still hate the apostrophe/comma setups and try to use spaces as often as possible.

In Norway we just use space: See: 1 million = 1 000 000. Easy eh? Also we use the comma for decimals, though personally I use a period.

The comas/dots/apostrophes as spaces between sets of three numerical digits are most useful when dealing with handwriting. Spaces aren't always visible enough in such situations.

Returning to the topic, I read in the newspapers today that the Norwegian mercenaries have been sentenced to death. Apparently the court didn't even bother with hearing the defense.

Use the oil fund to buy yourselves a fuckload of bombers and lay complete waste to Congo I say. Make them go ZI.

    Well, they're practically ZI already.

Make them go zero pop then.

They're appealing to the supreme court.

Perhaps Norway can find a way to blackmail Congo so they will drop the charges. If this doesn't work, just conquer them and make it a colony.

The foreign ministry was approached about sorting this out outside of courts. They answered they had no interest in circumventing a nations court procedures.
