I sure don't and I've gotten my PC pretty much exclusively UK English now but Word kept refusing to accept that I wasn't American and I kept putting off fixing it because I was lazy. But then I had some actual work to do which made it the perfect time to sit down and work it out and then I found this site:

    http://www.lizjamieson.co.uk/2007/12/03 ... word-2007/

And not on the first, second or third option did I fix it (the first and second I'd done anyway), but the fourth thing on the list finally killed the default settings. It should never have been that hard.

Wow. Thank you for finding this, because I have some troubles with the default language as well.

I always seem to find solutions to my computing problems on sites I've never heard of and will likely never visit again.

Behold how I made my DVD Burner region free:

Not the greatest solution if your PC is always on, but I shut it down when I sleep so the fans don't keep me awake so I don't worry about the reset issue.

Wheeee! Thanks for the link, Vorak! I recently got around to getting Office '07, so being able to finally nerf that damned American dictionary has made me a happy, happy young woman.

So, does it just set the default "what" to "wot wot, eh gov?" or something?

In all seriousness, is it just stuff like "colour" vs. "color" or are there grammatical variations that my ignorance doesn't allow me knowledge of?

American English is considered incorrect spelling in most schools and universities here.

I have had 1 lecturer state that as long as you consistently used either US or UK and didn't vary between the 2 throughout your work he was happy but most markers will deduct marks for incorrect spelling and grammar.

We've been having some pretty serious in-class arguments about the spelling of various elements and chemicals - about half the class were taught American spelling in modern public schools, and the rest of us either went to school before America started infecting the world with their stupidity or went to a private school where real spelling and grammar actually mattered.

So... dump the US dictionary. It's WRONG.

The problem is most school computers are set to US English due to lazy technicians just installing from the disc and leaving it at that, but the teachers use UK English. It is understandably quite confusing for many students because of this. Also many Primary and Secondary teachers allow the use US English which then screws up the kids written language later on in senor high school and University when they are penalised for doing things the way they were taught ie. that the spell check is never wrong.

    Infecting? INFECTING?
You lass, are fortunate to be under Amercia's influence at all!

You all just need to chill out and leave the Americanized (contrary to ignorant belief, it would be "Americanized" and not "Americanised")English as the default for your operating systems and applications. Are any of you familiar with inches and feet? They are Emperical units of measure. Can you imagine why the Empire abandoned the English system? Because it is rubbish! Such is why the United Kingdom will one day abandon the English way of communicating in English and most probably adopt the American standard. One benefits from this foreknowledge by leaving his settings be and getting used to it now.

Such vitriol over something so trivial? I mean, if I see the word "colour" I freaking get the idea of what the person who wrote it meant. I don't see why it's such a big deal. Different areas of the world have their own language idiosyncrasies, and as the world gets more globalized and communications increase I have a feeling that there will eventually be only one standard English, mostly likely a combination of US, UK, and other influences.

There are so many things wrong with this post that I don't know where to start.

Oh wait, yes I do. I'll start with this:

    I hate you.

DavisChanger: I... just... wow, there's nothing I can say that could possibly shame you more than the knowledge you actually made that post. Wow. Seriously, issues much?

Philes: I am the end result of spending the first 16 years of my life sans TV, being very very good at the literary subjects at school, and two multiplle-university-degree grammar-and-spelling nazi parents. You should be thankful that's all I allowed myself.

I've heard that Fahrenheit is a great unit to measure temperature. No wait, it isn't.

I love how in aviation we use nautical miles for speed, celcius for temperatures, statute miles for distance, feet for altitude and pounds for fuel on board. And somehow it all makes sense.

Shame? Americans know no shame! We just act without reflection. To look back at what we've just done takes time away from doing the next thing.

Furthermore, you erred greviously in implying how I should feel about my own post. I'm the American here, I tell everybody else how to think and feel. In response, everybody else is supposed to hate me. Niles got it right.

This will be better for everybody if you just stick to the script, dollface.

Yeah, everything that has to do with boats must have different units than it would normally have. I've experienced the same thing here in Sweden.
