dll file help - solved

Alright, so my boyfriend sent me the virtual discs for this game, and I installed it just fine, but it won't run off of anything but the playdisk. I have the 1.0.7.4 patch and the high res patch. I try running the game from my computer, and it gives me an error that binkw32.dll is missing, so I check the forums, and download both it and mss32.dll (since I got that error afterward) and put them in the arcanum folder, which didn't work, so I moved them to the system 32 folder, which also didn't work, so I put mss32.dll back in the arcanum folder (windows said it needed to be there) but it still doesn't work when I try to run the game. so I used the run>>cmd>>regsvr32 (filename) for both, and that doesn't work.

I get this error "The procedure entry point _AIL_set_stream_volume@8 could not be located in the dynamic link library mss32.dll" if I try to run the game, and this error "Loadlibrary("mss32.dll") failed - the specified module could not be found." if I try to use the regsvr32 command.

I checked through the forums and found several similar issues, some of which were fixed, though most were not. One had a screenshot of the arcanum folder and I found out I was missing a few .dat files. I only had arcanum4.dat, so I copy/pasted arcanum 1-3, but I don't have a 5, so I don't know if that means anything.

I can run the game, yes, but it only runs off of the disc launcher, which doesn't apply any of the patches I have. Seeing as I have a large screen, I'd rather utilize all of it.

I am running windows xp sp3. My boyfriend runs windows 7 64-bit, and has no problems with anything relating to arcanum or these patches.

I think that is most of the relevant information necessary. Please help me?

For the solution to this problem: I uninstalled my existing copy of the game, then installed it again from the discs (torrented).

After that, I applied the 1.0.7.4 patch.

Then I installed the high res patch, however, the UAP patch made me uninstall the high res patch and reinstall it afterward, so you might want to do UAP first.

-----A note about UAP: if you have saved games before you install UAP, they will not work afterward, so it is recommended you do this for a fresh install only------

Then finish with the high res patch, and you should be good to go.

No, I'm not a guru for this, else I wouldn't have had to post here, I just noticed a lot of people who needed help didn't post the solutions or anything afterward, so I thought I'd open myself up for people who might need help with this or a further explanation of the processes I went through.

 

Also, we tried copying over his dll files for me to use. If I use his bink file it doesn't work at all, but his mss32.dll file at least gets me past the "incorrectly installed in the windows directory" errors.

However, now I'm having the problem he is (that I didn't know he was having) where the game launches, blackscreens, and crashes. o.o

it seems i adopted his problems instead of mine.

 

I don't know where he got his copies of the discs from, so I'm thinking you're probably right about them being corrupted or incomplete. I've been looking for a place to download them from but the only ones I found weren't virtual discs, they were just zip files.

I've reinstalled a couple of times, but it still does the same thing, so I think I'll check out that website you mentioned to see if I can find another copy of the game.

 

eheh, yeah, I figured that out when I went to look. I did find a torrent for the game itself though, so I'm downloading that. i think it might be where he originally got it from, so it should be complete.

I figure I'll install it from there, and then apply the other two things you mentioned. I don't want to have to start over, but such is life when you're trying to play old games that you don't have discs for anymore

 

the problem is I don't know where else to get the game from. He originally played it years ago and doesn't have the discs anymore, so that's why we had to get it from a torrent.

But I will do it the way you suggested and hope it works.

wonderful news, the torrent was the same as his, but it was complete, so somehow his got corrupted I guess. I added the uap and all of that, and everything works perfectly now.

 

Yes, welcome to the forum, Havockitten. Wait, a second. Is it just me or did I saw the word 'torrented'?

 

Openly discussing installation of a pirated copy of much-beloved game by a company that most likely went under because NOT ENOUGH PEOPLE BOUGHT THEIR GAMES isn't the best idea on this forum.

Buy it off GOG or something, costs very little and you save yourself a lot of hassle.
