Excellent! We'll need to wait until the older regulars are around (Milo, you, Retard, Jinxed, etc) and then get a thread going.

I'm up for the Type Thingâ„¢ awards again.

Gamespot liked Divine Divinity, but then again, they've turned into corporate whores who like everyone, so I'd probably look elsewhere for an opinion. It could be good, but don't trust the G Spot.

I'm playing the demo, and uhh. Well, it's Diablo. You have four primary stats: Strength, Agility, Constitution and Intelligence. No Charisma or Wisdom for dialogue purposes. Combat is realtime, and a tat confusing. You can't scroll on the map, your view is fixed on your character and the area you're present in. The first quests involved slaugter en-mass, and some very fed-exxy quests.

Seems to be plenty of skills to choose from, including more RPG'ey ones. Great bartering system (like Fallout!!!!! :) ). Goods for goods instead of just buy/sell, and you can barter anytime. There's a good Journal/Diary with a nice automap too. I bet there's more pros to be found.

Overall, probably a game i'd buy when the price is low enough.

DD doesn't sound too bad, but not really my type of thing. Some of the quest types don't sound too bad, but I probably wouldn't pay money for it, even if it was available here in Aus (which I don't think it is).

I have been playing it all day and it is GREAT. I'm not kidding you, this is a good game.

It's more an action-adventure than an RPG. Like RK says, it has no persuade skill or equivalent, so there won't be non-combat routes through. However, there ARE a lot of NPC's to interact with in fairly linear dialogues, in an adventure type way. Quests are not just hacking or fed-ex, there are some puzzle/problem solving ones too.

It mimics Diablo's method of walking around, which is a plus, because it makes the game easy to control. The character system is also heavily from Diablo, but the skills development is a lot more freeform and includes many non-combat ones, such as trading and alchemy.

The appeal is partly exploration/character progression, partly adventure style questing.

While it does share many aspects of Diablo, the game plays entirely differently. It is not manic. It is not a kill fest. Although you do a lot of combat, there is a more measured feel and the story is more than just incidental.

Strangely enough, the skill system makes it feel a little like Arcanum. I find myself considering different set-ups of character. Mainly, your choices effect inventory or combat, like when you decide which tech disciplines or magic colleges to focus on.

I'll let you know if the appeal of this one fades quickly or hangs around.

Release in Australia: "2nd half, 2002" - so, any time now... or in 3 months :p

I left my system downloading the 400MB(!) demo last night when I went to bed... and had a power burp sometime during the process, so now I have to start over. GRRR...

Is a power burp one of those special moves in a console beat 'em up?

Me thinks i should try playing the demo a bit more. I got thrown off when i, after exploring the entire first town, got zapped by a dwarf for picking up a bottle lying on the floor :x I'd like to try some other classes too, fighters aren't exactly my favorite type, i'm more of a mage/ranged weapons person. Anyone know anything about the other classes? Any variety in them?

Damn, i gotta find someone who owns it, nag him endlessly, and loan the game. And curse my curiosity while i'm at it.

After I read what your first impressions I think I will not be getting dd myself. For now it'll end up on "burn it from a friend" list. I will buy another game tomorrow and if it will be as good as I expect it to I'll post a review.

There isn't very much variety between the classes. You can basically have any skills you like as you level up, so classes are mainly a matter of starting skills and character graphic. I took a mage.

I believe you meant "Up Up Down Down Left Right Left Right B A Start" - for some reason that is a widely known code. The game I know it comes from (I don't know if it's in any others) is Probotector (as it was known to me) aka Contra.

So, what was this thread about? Oh, yeah, DD...

Well, like Fatman said, from what I've heard everyone can be the same skills wise, but each of the classes has a special ability, kind of like Diablo (original, not D2) where the Warrior had the repair skill, Rogue had disarm trap and Mage had recharge staff. From what I can gather, DD has a similar system. Survivor (or whatever that class is) has some skill, Fighter and Mage have their own skills, but otherwise everyone is the same. So class choice doesn't really matter much.

Oh yeah, I had forgotten about the special skill (shows how much I use it).

The Warrior's is "Whirly Attack" or something, for when surrounded by enemies.

The Mage's is "Switch position", which is a short range teleport transposing you with the target. I never use it.

    I can't remember the Survivor's one.

I played it more last night. After the initial few quests, the combat dies down a bit and there is more exploration and talking to NPC's. The story develops as well. It's still got my attention.

Try it and tell me whether it works like in Diablo - ie on "Out of the fire and into the frying pen" basis.

I HATED that phasing spell - short-ranged random teleport is NOT a good idea. Although, there are situations in which it would have been theoretically useful - such as not having the time/spell/ability to cast teleport. The only good thing about phasing was not having to target it. Apart from that it sucked. If "out of the frying pan and into the fire" hadn't already been a cliche, it would have become one after seeing that spell in action.

Is that burning ink I smell?

I supsect you're right. I don't find it useful enough to actually use it, that's for sure.
