It occurs when I enter the Black Mountain Clan Tunnels. In the unpatched version of the game I got the 'Quit: Yes/ No' menu after I entered the Tunnels. However, I patched it and I didn't get that message anymore, however both the third barrel in the Forge and the Pillar of Truth are missing. On successive visits to Orebender's level, several tiles appear to have disappeared after the first visit tiles.

Also the price of worn boots has gone down to 8 coins.

I'm going to try to reload from Derholm but I want to know if its the game or the save or if its something I can remedy...

Sounds like one of the infamous Arcanum bugs to me. My advice is play a saved game that isn't corrupted or the problem with persist through the rest of your game in bad and unforseeable ways.

You get the option to quit when the save game does not match the game data.
e.g. if a prototype in your inventory is then deleted from the game, when you try to load it you will get the quit option.

If an earlier save works = that save was corrupt.
If earlier saves do not work = game corrupt.
Copy your saves to a different directory.
Delete Arcanum. Re-install. Move saves back.

Are you patched, antisocialmunky? If not, do get patched. I was getting something like this back when I played an unpatched game, I think certain items can do it sometimes.

Upon closer inspection, there aren't any objects in Orebender's level of the mines except for Orebender. No chest, no pillar of truth.

And I guess it could have been an item, the game crashed in the caves when I tried to move all items off a dead kite beserker in the unpatched game. Loading from an earlier save, I found that the 8 coin worn boots weren't related to the visits to the black mountain caves but instead to something that happened sometime after Gilbert Bate's mansion. I suspect that's the initial symptom of the problem.

Has anyone had run itno a problem where the cost of an item changes for no reason?

    You bother looting kite berserkers???

Did you get any penalties on basic stats, especially CH or BE? A scar perhaps?

    I'm poor dangit!

The price change only effects one item: worn boots, nothing else.

I also did a full reinstall which restores all the chests and items but not the missing tiles in the BMC tunnels so I guess I'll try and figure out how to go in an out without causing a crash. Really odd bug though.

When you do a full reinstall, I'd suggest completely removing the game first before reinstalling, as some snafu's will follow you otherwise.

Also, looting bezerkers, trash cans, and whatever else isn't nailed down is an excellent way to make cash, especially in the beginning! :D

Trash cans- yes, for certain items you might later need- but to loot KITE BERSERKERS one must be seriously starving. Those good-for-nothing tiny swords of theirs sell for like 6 coins (if not 2), and the gold they carry on their person isn't much more. Looting kite BOWMEN makes some sense- the bow sells for 40+ and if you're yourself an archer you can replenish the ammo.

I've found that kite swords are quite 'effective' against ore golems and the like. When the sword gets broken, no big deal. Toss the shiv in barrel and forget about it.
