i actually got tired of the wheel of time. once i hit book 7 or 8 (i don't really remember which), i got bored of the characters... i knew what they needed to do, they knew what needed to be done, but nothing new was happening... i felt like the author was just dragging out the story to milk it for as much money as possible... he should have wrapped it up and let it go...

I've read most of their stuff. Their latest offerings look really crap though.

They're fun to read, but the characters are really quite cliched, and so are the roles they fill. I also have doubts about the meaningfulness of them all.

These are also good, but really, if you've read one Eddings series you've read the other 3. He literally has one plot that he rehashes each time. He even points this out in his own books!

See, I tried reading the first book, and it didn't interest me in the slightest. Then I talked to someone who's read them all, and found out that hey, the plot is really standard - so standard I read it in another series (the name of which I forget now), so I have absolutely no motivation to read it. From what little I read, I also doubt you can compare Jordan's style to Tolkien's.

If you like fantasy though, give David Gemmell a try. He tends to go for heroic fantasy, rather than saving the world fantasy though, and I think the books are better for it - the heroes aren't trying to save the whole world, just change their little part of it. Ravenheart is an excellent book with a great ending, and pretty much any Druss the Legend book is well worth it as well.

I certainly agree. I've read it and the next three books, and they're great.

I've read the Belgariad, the Mallorean, and the Elenium ones. I also loved them, though the plot can be sort of repetitive.

Never read Jordan, but I have read a lot of Tolkien. Not just The Hobbit and LOTR - but also The Silmarillion, Smith of Wootton Major and Farmer Giles of Ham. I love Tolkien.

Well, since you seem in the mood for fantasy books, these are some authors I enjoy: Terry Pratchett, Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman, Louise Cooper, Roger Zelazny.

All I have to say is DragonLance.

I am one of those DragonLance fans who would rather see a NEW game like BG or something that was in the DragonLance world or something...maybe even a MMORPG....if it's DragonLance, it's mine!

I enjoy the works of Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman and I also enjoy the works of Richard A Knaak.

    BTW, who else loves DragonLance?

Now, I've been a fan of Drows and such and am just now beginning to read the Ice Wind Dale series....

I like Dragonlance... and I have already mentioned Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman. From them, I loved "The Death Gate Cycle". Great series.
As for Richard A. Knaak, the only thing I ever read from him was the Dragonrealm series - which is very good.
I also forgot to mention a good fantasy author - Anne McCaffrey.

Thing I don't like about Forgoten Realm is it's too spread out....you never really know what's happening and such...

DragonLance is nice and linear, with a bunch of side books and such that help to explain what is going on....

A great book by Richard A. Knaak is "The Legend of Huma," which is a great book, but if you don't like dramatic stuff and sad endings and such, don't read it :p

    Goodkind is great author :)

but I have been enthralled by the Dragonriders of Pern. I believe that any true fan of fantasy-fiction would enjoy them just for the fact of dragons. I am not looking at the books from a "good story", "good plot", "meaningful", or "good development of characters" point odf view!!! I simply enjoy them for the fact that I can daydream of the 'what-if' of having a dragon or even fire lizards. :D

Silvara, if you haven't read it, you should try the 5th Earthsea book (The Wind's Four Quarters). I really enjoyed it. You know, for years I never read Tehanu because everyone said it was a crap reaction to Le Guin's feminist critics, but I read it when the fifth book came out and thought it was excellent.

Rosenshyne, you simply missed what made the game fun: multiplayer. I myself don't do multiplayer with others, as I tend to be somewhat anti-social. (thus why all my clans fell apart.) Try playing Bg or BG2 via multiplayer with a party that is made up totally of characters you created. That is fun, because you don't have to deal with whiny personalities, and they aren't going to leave you have way through the game when you need them (*glares into Arcanum at Virgil*).

I myself love R.A Salvatore. I have a good number of his novels, though this is also coming from a kid who's listening to Tenacious D (with a swingy sounding bagpipe song after it), and has both Lenore and Squee (if you haven't read, you CANNOT understand) sitting on his floor. :) Silvara, I agree with you. The Death Gate Cycle was a very good series. It was an interesting twist on Sci-Fi. I would've loved it if they had come out with some books about the war between the Patyrns and the... (I forget the name of the other race, the ones that split the world), or something about after the series had ended. I haven't read anything of Terry Goodkind's, well, that I know of, but I'll look into borrowing one of his books next tyme I go to the library. :)

There is a fifth Earthsea book!? Damn! I never knew! I hate living here sometimes...
Ah well, I'll have to persuade my parents to buy it.

Amazon is actually really good, the thing about them is they actually use other sites and like take the stuff from them or something....that's how I got my Skies of Arcadia game...

You can usually find anything that you can't find on Amazon...

Half.com is an American thing, I think. My wife moaned a bit when she first moved here and couldn't use it anymore. I'm not sure if you'd have access to it in On a Quest for Knowledge, Silvara ;)
