Custom background files old?

I just downloaded and used the files from the link in this thread(http://terra-arcanum.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=14010) to create my own backgrounds. As far as that goes everything works fine.

but I noticed while creating a character that "Apprenticed to a Blacksmith" was missing from the background choices. It was there before I used the background edits so I assumed I did something wrong

after double checking, in the background.mes file I found that the lines for the background were messed up.
it was:
{20}{1002}
{21}{88}
{22}{400}
{23}{}
{24}{}

instead of:
{20}{1002}
{21}{88}
{22}{}
{23}{400}
{24}{}

It works now. Then I read the official latest patch (1.0.7.4?) notes for Arcanum and it says that "Apprenticed to a Blacksmith" was just made available.

Have the files I installed reverted the game back to a previous version? Or maybe just these specific files are an older version? if so are there any important fixes missing from these files that were in the latest patch?

I think the files with the background editor didn't include the background from 1.0.7.4, Apprenticed to a Blacksmith, as they should. It's best to start with your own files, based on the patch you have: Arcanum4.dat is from patched data, and overwrites everything in previous databases, like Arcanum1.dat, Arcanum2.dat, and Arcanum3.dat.

So, use:
Arcanum4.dat\rules\backgrnd.mes; Arcanum3.dat\mes\gameback.mes; Arcanum3.dat\rules\effect.mes

gameback.mes and effect.mes aren't patched and available in Arcanum4.dat, so it's safe to use the Arcanum3.dat versions.

It appears that apprenticed to a blacksmith was always available, just glitched. The fix you made yourself is sufficient to fix the problem, and it's the same chance Troika made to have the background become available again. Good job.
