Creating Custom Backgrounds

I know how to create custom backgrounds, and i've become quite skilled at it, but there is one thing that troubles me: is there a list somewhere that tells you what all the item numbers are? I like to include weapons and such in my backgrounds, and it's a great deal of trouble to enter random numbers, start the game, check, go back to background.mes, change the numbers, check again, ad infinitum. So if anyone knows where I can get my hands on such a list, I'd be most greatful.
