Because the thread is not about the game coming out, but me actually having it. Liking it so far. Anyone else try it out?

(I took advantage of the fact that I'm in Montreal now)

I don't have it, no. No Viking civilization in the original installment I hear. That sucks.

Especially considering they have Vikings in the game trailer and the intro movie.

They'll probably be included via an expansion or as DLC. Still, I liked Civ IV and I have hopes for this game, but I probably won't buy it until it's more reasonably priced.

I also hope it won't chug too much on my rig, 2 GB DDR3 seriously ain't much RAM these days, and my motherboard can't support more.

I killed my first computer by installing the wrong type of RAM in the motherboard. I forced it because I got frustrated and it cracked. So technically it wasn't the installation, but my efforts to install that broke the motherboard.

From what I've heard, all the features are actually there as advertising.

Well talk about bullshit, this is exactly why I hate steam and digital distribution in general. Picture this, you are about to go to uni for the day when you receive a phone call from your local EB games telling you that your limited edition Civ 5 is ready to be picked up today. Now I thought it doesn't come out till tomorrow you think, you shrug your shoulders and continue to listen to the man at the store telling you that it is policy to pick it up within 48 hours otherwise they have to send it back. Ok, you can deal with that, you go to uni, sit in the class and contribute as always. Class is over and you get into your car and drive to the EB store to pick up your copy. Magnificent! The box comes with little figurines that I'll never touch again as well as a soundtrack and a book I'll flip through maybe twice if I'm lucky. Finally you reach home and slide the DVD into your computer. Hmmm it didn't autorun, no problem I'll manually install it. It loads up and takes me to steam, you sigh as you know that you won't be playing this game as often anymore because you'll have to be connected to the net and always download new shit before you can start it. You enter in the product code like it asks and then suddenly...

Cannot install because it is not released in Australia for another 18 hours.

Why sell something, hard copy nonetheless if it cannot be used?

Had the exact same problem with Half Life 2, bought it new on the day it came out. CD version, 5 complete CD's.

Got home, tried to install it. 'Your CD key is already in use'; not sure how that's possible, the box was sealed but alright, I'll go back to the store and get another copy.

So I do that, and the fucking thing refuses to recognise my CD's and downloads the entire game from Steam. There goes the monthly bandwidth limit. At the start of a new billing cycle, none the less.

Needless to say I found a way to play some Steam games off-line and without steam, no idea if it's still possible.

I can run Half Life Blue Shift on my computer without steam. But that's a fairly old game.

Australian stores have sold their shit too early in the past, too. In actuality, after the bullshit Spore went through a couple years ago, I can understand completely why Firaxis would pull that on you with Civ5, although I think it's a bit silly.

Its not like we are going to gain some competitive multiplayer edge or anything. Doesn't explain why people are playing before Australia either. I thought the whole idea of digital distribution was to make things global.

Due to the timezones shouldn't Australia logically be one of the first countries to be able to play a game?

You would think that, but because we are before most people we have to wait for everyone to catch up.

It's because you're bogarting (as in Humphrey Bogart) most of the marsupials. What's the closest anyone else gets to a kangaroo? An opossum. Hardly any comparison. When's the last time you saw a possum box somebody?

That's not what I mean, really. They're afraid you're going to go home and pirate it for everybody on the internet. Spore had a torrent three days before release, but it was buggy and obtuse. Then, some Australian took his copy home, and Maxis saw yet another game completed cracked the day before launch.
