There was a screw up having to do with the version of CivEdit released with the new patch. It was apparently too new a version or some shit like that. The correct version of CivEdit was available for download yesterday.

This might be what you were referring to. Or it might not be. Last I heard, the patch was available, but I haven't checked any of the Civ sites recently. Maybe there was another problem with the patch that I haven't heard of.

Ok, I just found out something really, REALLY sweet. I am playing against Romans and Greeks. The greeks are over the ocean, but I have yet to even try to contact them. Ceasar and myself are on one continent. Our capitol cities started rather close together. I mean, like 12-15 squares apart. Well, after I won the race across the continent (building cities in a straight line, hey might be stupid, but he was doing it too) Caesar had slipped a couple of settlers past me and built two cities on my north side (He was to the south) Well, I found out that you could order him to move his people out of my territory or declare war! All he does is apologize and ass-kiss, and then promptly moves his units back over his borders. I now am in control of 3/5ths of the continent.

Also, something else I wasn't expecting started happening. Caesar began losing his cities that shared a border with me. They all started defecting to my side. I know this is because I have a kick ass culture, but he has lost like 6 cities to me. I am now preparing for war and plan to drive him off the face of the map. Next I will try to work on the greeks.

Civ 3 has all kinds of cool strategy things like that not found in other games. It's part of it's appeal.

Last night, I generated some major cash with a round-robin map selling deal. Buy a map from one guy, then goto someone else and make them pay to swap maps. Now your map is bigger, so the first guy will pay ou to swap. Go to another leader and swap again. Back to the first guy - he'll pay you again.

Cleo was my first swapper, and she ended up swapping with me, like, 4 times. By the end of the dealings, she had no gold in her treasury to buy the new map with, so promised 4 gold/turn for it. Scchwweeeeeeet.

[EDIT]BTW, Milo, Jar must have been right, because I checked out the infrgrames FTP site, and patch 17f is no longer on there.

Fatman, I have to say something. If I had based my decision to get this game on the whining nagging comments of the posters at all the Civ forums out there, namely, 1bigcommunity.com, I would have delayed for another 6 months. Here are some examples of their posts..

    AI is Dumb!!
    AI Cheats!!
    Corruption Destroying Me!!
    Problems, Problems, Problems...

Well, Fatman thank you for being so positive because I am now enjoying the crap outta myself with this game. I would have to say this is the most fun I've ever had out of a game. (Well, Max Payne come damn close..)

Oh, I got one question. Where is the Civ Editor? Is it a download? (Not that I'm gonna use it right now, or anytime in the near future.. I'm too new to know what I'm doing much less edit the game..)

Nice of you to say so, Retard. I think we can call it equal, since your recent (persistent!) interest relit my own interest. I just spent a very satisying weekend kicking the crap out of Mao.

Tonight I'm continuing my campaign of violence against HannaBarbera.

Regarding CivEdit, I haven't used it really, but I believe it is installed with the main app, under the same program group.

Civ3Edit can be used to change game rules and the such. I've made a nice little scenario where the Romans are back to being Militaristic and Industrious, and the Chinese Militaristic and Commercial. I also made it so your unique unit doesn't trigger the golden age. The really cool thing about these rule changes is, if you don't do a map, the computer creates one for you! It works just like a normal game, except that by default all the race spots are taken up, so if you like playing on huge maps (like me), then you'll have to take off a couple of computer players each time if you want to have a chance.

Isn't this good? The person who dug up this thread also got me back into Civ, and I'm pretty happy about it . I love smashing those Egyptians armies just after they cross the border!

Doesn't the AI start to cheat first on Monarch-level?

It depends on how you define the word "cheat". After Regent level is where the AI starts getting acknowledged bonuses over what the human player gets. But even prior to that, even on the easy levels, I think the computer does some cheating.

For instance, how many of you have noticed (even on the easiest levels), the computer plopping down one lone city out in the middle of fucking nowhere. It makes no sense strategically what the computer has just done. Well... not until 3000 years later when it just so happens that the computer city is right on top of one of the only coal resources. Or oil, or iron, etc.

Also, I'm sure, sure that the computer can cross ocean tiles before it gets magnetism (or was that navigation?).

I haven't noticed the prescience about resources, but I'll keep an eye out for it. At this point, you probably know more about it than me.

Regarding crossing the ocean, it can be done is a Caravel (navigation) with no issues. You should remember, though, it CAN be done with a galley. They don't always sink when deep water - just most of the time. I'm not sure the AI would let the comp take chances like that, but maybe it's like the resource thing; maybe it KNOWS when their galley will sink and when it won't, so it just crosses in a galley when it's safe.

What the hell do you think you're doing?

I lost one city to the Aztecs early on in my Roman game (which I just won the Space Race in earlier tonight, courtesy of me controlling most of the world's aluminum supplies .

That was on Regent level, right?

If that's so, then the AI is fucked. I hate that kind of crap. I am beginning to feel a rage that will only be assuaged by kicking the poo out of Babylonia.

Last night I took three of their cities. Razed one, kept 2. There is still the rest of the continent waiting for the tramp of Japanese feet tonight. Samurai ROCK during the middle ages.

Since you crapped out on the domination attempt, I fully expect you to begin another game and this time go for true meglomania. What score did your space win get you?

*hands the Civ3 disk back to Ioo*

(don't worry, Jar, I just created a flash movie of the splash screen and renamed it "Civ3 Setup.exe" - it should be enough to keep Ioo out of our hair a while)

Ok, Ioo, that's it. You asked for it. Keep checking the Limerick thread for more on me and your mum.

Back to Civ3. Well, I ran all over Caesar last night. Out of 20 cities he has like 8 left. He WAS anxious to sign a peace treaty, so I signed just because my civ went into anarchy. (I am playing democracy) Well, I know that to form armies you have to get a leader. Well, what I'm wondering is how do you get a leader in peacetime? I mean, right now I have to attack towns one at a time. I have yet to see a leader in this game.

Oh, yeah and longbowmen rule. I have taken every single town with longbowmen. Although I'm now in the industrial ages (first time I've been there) and upgrading everything I can to riflemen. Rifleman vs. warrior, horseman, archer = no contest

According to this site there's no cheating from either the human player or the AI at regent level. The AI is always trying to send settlers to every reachable free spot even if it means the city soon will change allegiance due to culture so I don't think there's any cheating there either.

Well, all I can say is that in my experience, the AI civs seem to have a sixth sense when plopping cities out in the middle of nowhere. I don't have any solid proof of this. The evidence for it is strictly anecdotal. Either way, it's something that I work with when I'm playing my games. When I notice the AI doing something fishy like this, I'll do what I can to capture that city spot from them one way or another.

Anyway, what are you guys' thoughts on the latest patch? Any of you started games with it yet?

I'm liking it overall. The goody huts seem to produce a lot more settlers than they used to, so next game I'm going to try the Americans for the first time.

Another thing I noticed (again, anecdotaly) is that there's a greater feeling of all the AI civs are playing against me, and not necessarily each civ for itself. For example, the AI seems to trade techs among themselves for dirt cheap. Of course, I'm not included in this little diplomatic love-fest. Oh well, they'll feel my wrath soon enough... A side effect of this increased tech trading among the AI civs is that the techs become cheaper for me (especially because I'm not always in the lead anymore). This has the result that the ages seem to be coming quicker than they used to. Thoughts?
