Well, I threatened to do it, and here it is. Mine, Sheriff fatmans, Milos, and Jarinors new Civ 3 thread. (And who ever else wants to reply.) Guys, I am like, so close to buying this game it isn't funny. But I got a couple questions. I was hoping I could get some of my friends to help me out, somewhere that the admins don't boot you out because of your siamese twin sig. Or when you apologize in a post, they delete your entire thread. Assholes!! Any way, enough about 1bigcommunity.com.

    1. I have read that the AI is rather sucky when it comes to waging war. They (forumers) say that the AI tends to ignore armies altogether. In one thread a poster wrote he landed an entire army on the greeks continent. He also had a spy in their embassy, and every turn, while he was advancing and eventually attacking, he checked the greeks response to his "D-Day" like invasion. They never responded at all, according to him. In fact they (the greeks) were content to chase his army from 10-15 turns ago, even though this army was nearly dead, they chased it all over, and never launched against his new army until he was on top of their town. Ya'll noticed anything like this?

    2. Also, I have read that the AI units versus your units is rather unfair and unrealistic. Example; a spearman defeating a tank. Quite often too. Noticed this?

I hope people respond to this thread. Civ 3 ain't dead for me yet.

    1) The AI does occasionallymake decisions I would not agree with. It should be noted that this is the same AI that regularly kicks my arse.

    2) It's all about numbers and gameplay. Sure, Knights sometimes beat tanks and Galleons sometimes beat Battleships. It's very hard to see how this would happen in real life, but I don't think it should spoil your game. Alpha Centauri has not been colonised in real life, either. My point being: building a spaceship and combat-by-the-numbers are integral parts of the game and can therefore be factored into your strategy.

It makes me laugh when I see this blinkered view of a need for realism in any game. I laugh my arse off at the people who will happily argue that women need to be shown in a submissive role in Arcanum to preserve the realism of the 19th century background, completely ignoring the ogre standing a short distance away wielding a magic sword and wearing a suit of 12th century plate armour.

    Strong points, strong points.
    Next question.

Another poster a 1bigshittycommunity.com posted that as he was allied with everybody but france, and all of their combined armies were burning Joan D' Arc's outskirts, and his own army was pretty much sitting in the middle of her land, burning everything, he offered? gave? sent? (I don't know, since I don't have the game) a peace treaty, but she refused. My question is, does the computer never turn tail? or try to kiss up?

"Oh, your army is killing me and I have lost 3/4ths of my cities, and all my people are revolting so yes, I will sign a peace treaty with you!"

Does the AI never do that?

(I really hope so. In 15 years, when I am finally decent at civ 3, I hope to be riding up to a city and they say "oh please mister retard, don't burn, pillage, and sack us!! Here are our young virgin maidens and all our grain and money!!" That would do wonders for my ego! )

Yes the AI does give in occassionally. They may posture and bluster, but if you're really kicking their bums, there is a chace they'll sign over their grannies into yuor care.

This chance is lessened if at some stage previously in the game you give them a reason not to trust you (eg. they see you push someone else's grannie into a bush¹), or you manage to get into a real hate relationship with them (eg. you called their grannie a cock smoking whore, tie her up in a barn and strip naked¹) or do both (eg. tie her in a barn then, upon getting caught red ... handed ... you shout "I'm a dirty bastard"¹).

¹May not actually be game event.

Are there "ages" that you advance into? If so, what are they and how do you advance? Or do you not "advance" per se? You just get more techs, etc....

    ?

I'm not sure exactly how the answer to this will affect your decsion whether to buy or not, but nevertheless ...

Yes. There are ages. You move from one to another by researching all (or most) of the tech in one age. I didn't find it had much of an impact on gameplay to be honest, since even in Civ2 there were limits to how far you could advance in one branch of research without doing ones from other branches. The Ages thing just kind of formalised it.

Sheriff how do you obtain resources? Is it like Age of Empires, where you queue up a villager, and then make the villager chop wood, mine gold or stone, or farm/hunt/fish/forage? How do you gather resources and what resources are there? (I'm talking about early in the game. Like right to begin with.)

I mean, is it like, you make a villager chop a tree, and you see him walk to the forest and start chopping?

I'm sorry for all my ignorant posts, but I just have never played a turn based strat, and before AOK, had never played a strat game PERIOD.

If you want to build up a civilization and conduct diplomacy, buy it. If you want a war-game, look somewhere else.

Stay away from this game. It's worse than crack and heroin combined.

It will also change your opinion of formerly beloved leaders like Gandhi. Unless for some reason you already have a deep, burning hatred for him, in which case your opinion will stay the same.

Not nearly as much as I used to, retard.

Once I accomplished this: [IMG] Some of the fire went away from the gaming experience.

Not really. I got to where I could beat the handicapped levels fairly regularly. Regent was/is still a challenge for me. I just kinda lost steam. Burned out.

I definitely got my moneys worth out of it, though. I'll probably go on another Civ III binge after they release the next patch.

Well, after this weekend, when I show my wife how sweet and romantic I am by taking her away for a Valentines weekend, I will then join you in learning to hate Ghandi. (at least I HOPE she will let me buy Civ 3)

by the way, why the intense hatred for Ghandi? Why didn't you just play against other civs? (I'm assuming you can pick the civs you play against...)

Enjoy your weekend with the missus. If you do buy Civ III, then you won't be seeing each other for, oh... a couple months.

Why the intense hatred for Gandhi? I'll leave that to you. You'll find out on your own soon enough. And yeah, I could have just picked other Civs to play against, but after awhile, one of the main reasons for playing was to rough up the Indians and make them my bitch. Raze their cities whenever I felt like it. Demand outrageous sums of money and technology from Gandhi in order to provoke a war. Enslave their populace and set them to work clearing out disease infested jungles for the glory of my empire. MY EMPIRE!!! Muhahahha, take that Gandhi, you son-of-a-bitch. Take it! TAKE IT HARD! Muwahahahah...

So, yeah... This game hasn't had much of an affect on me. Not at all.

Can you enslave other civs people? I thought they just became your population but they tended to revolt or whatever...

What Milo sees in his dreams

*whisper* I'm coming for you Milo!! And there's nothing you can do about it!! I'm going to brush you off this continent like the lint in my belly-button!! *whisper*

Retard, Civ is great...as for me, I HATE THE RUSSIANS! That Catherine is one fat bitch!

Sorry, don't know what came over me...

I recently stopped my Civ binge when the Iroquios wrecked my massive invasion of Egypt which would (if successful) have seen me take over the entire empire in one turn. Hence, I was forced to attack before I was ready due to some unfortunate Mutual Protection Pacts, and the reason I stopped was when a lowly pikeman defeated my tank. Yes, it always happens for some strange reason. Sometimes I think the game determines beforehand who will win every conceivable battle.

Anyways, apart from that, it's very cool to see your empire dominating the world map. Apparently, if you kick enough ass, you can force an empire to sign over cities in peace treaties - I've never been able to do that, but it can be done.

Still, a great game, and everyone develops a pet civ that they absolutely despise and set out to destroy every time. It's very interesting to note that the Americans are rarely generated, and even more rarely picked as a civilisation. I think it's rather presumptuous to include a mere 200-300 year old civilisation in a game which features 4000 year old civilisations. Also, Abe Lincoln looks like a poof.

When you raze an enemy city, the population gets turned into workers. They're slower by half, but you don't have to pay any upkeep on them. Cruel? Yes. Ruthless? Yes. Do Gandhi's people deserve this horrible treatment? YES.

Hey guys, GUESS WHAT, GUESS WHAT, GUESS WHAT!!!!!!!!!! When I went to bed last night, I picked up the book I'm currently reading, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, and my wife looked at me and said, "I bet you ________ that you would rather read the book that I am reading." I said whatever, and she showed me the book she had. IT WAS THE CIV3 INSTRUCTION MANUAL. She bought Civ 3 for me!!!!!!!!!!!

Damn I've got a great wife. So, anyway, I played for like 2 hours last night, (yeah I know that's not a long time,) but I quit after Cleopatra handed me something on a round, silver platter. I'm not sure, but it looked a little like my ass.

Man, I'm so excited. I will try to keep my questions away from the dumb and obvious, though. My first question is why did my citizens, once my city got big enough, complain about it being too crowded? I didn't find the answer in the manual.

    Three cheers for my wife.

Citizens complain when they are unhappy. To combat unhappiness, adjust the happiness slider on your domestic advisor screen, build happiness improvements (like the temple) or assign labourers (the guys collecting food around your city in the city screen) as entertainers.

It's all in that book your wife was reading, or in the Civelopedia in the game, which is pretty easy to use. For instance, have a look under game concepts for "happiness." There should be some info there.

Your wife sounds like a lovely lady. Treat her nice.

    Happy Civving.
