KEO, a satellite set to be launched at the end of 2007, will carry the messages of our generation to the people 50,000 years in our future. I think this is pretty damn cool.

That's not only cool. That's one of the smartest things I've heard about for some years now, actually.

Well if all goes to plan people in 50 000 years will know who I am and what I thought about things anyway, without the help of a satelite.

That is pretty cool! We should zip up HoL and send it. Imagine future generations trying to figure out what the heck we're talking about here?!

They'd only decide that our time was a time of great chaos and ditch us.

Well, that and there's a limit of 6000 characters per message.

We could compress it 1000 times. It'd be the encyclopedia arcanum, equivalent to the cave drawings. Plus, it'd warp their perspective of mankind in the 21st century. The mind-funk would be worth it.

I'm sure they'd make the space for a site this awesome.

What if a strange alien race , like the Combine or something would follow the KEO back to earth and regain control of the whole earth ....if the do so , i don't care , if i am a normal person i should be dead anyway

Just so you know, this is actually my orbital death ray, the whole KEO thing is really just a cover.
People who write messages are just signing themselves up to be be practice targets.

I like the way the site states that the satellite will return to earth intact in 50,000 years. So these KEO people have developed some kind of foolproof asteroid zapping device? Perhaps they should share this amazing technology with the rest of the world.

This scheme is just plain stupid.
Option 1: In 50,000 years time humanity has been wiped out. Rats and fish aren't going to be concerned with retrieving a satellite.

Option 2: Humanity is still around. Even if there are major wars, plagues, etc, almost all data from the digital age will survive here on earth.

Instead of spamming the future they could try spending the money on some real space exploration.

Icairus, what brings you back from ages past?

Hmm , sounds fair .....but , if the KEO team freeze down themself and will remain "chill" for 50,000 years , then who knows?

Wow... Though you're not the first to think it, I know you might be the first to say it.
Yes, it's true that the money spent could have been used for a less aesthetic type of space travel, but really, if they've already come this far, I say that we should just let them do it. There is a pretty good chance that we'll still be around in 50,000 years. Hell, we lasted 50,000 years before now. Yes, I know that the advent of modern technology has made every war possibly cataclysmic, but I like to consider myself an optomist.

Or more simply, give it to me. I'd put it to much better use, I even promise to put it all back into the global economy by spending it.

Or we could always use the money to create a sequel to Arcanum?
