I'm having a number of issues trying to "install" the character editor 1.8 on a Win 7 64-bit computer.

    1. When trying to copy the files into my system32 folder, my computer tells me very sternly that riched32.dll cannot be modified. I'm in an admin account and I closed all other programs but it still fails to make any changes to the file.

    2. After the program absolutely refused to work on its own, I opened command prompt to try to run regsvr32, but I just cannot get the darn thing to register anything whatsoever.

    Please help? Thank you!

Getting those .dll's installed is going to be a bit of a bitch, methinks. As soon as I remember where to download this from, I'll take a look at it.

    Is bumping allowed?

If no one's going to answer, does anyone have any recommendations for other websites/forums/IRC rooms/etc. I could ask?

No and no. This more-or-less is the last place to look, unless you go through the Sierra Gateway and find something on the other side. I don't know, I haven't ever tried it myself.

However, I'll give installing this a shot on my machine at work tomorrow (since I'm running Vista at home).

So far no luck installing. Are you running 32 or 64 bit W7? Oh, and are you an administrator? I'm starting down the road of finding a fix, but it'll probably take me a day or two.

Thank you so so much for trying! I'm running Win 7 x64 and yes, I am the admin.

Try to install some older Windows on VirtualBox and use the Character Editor there?

Either that, or if he has Professional, he could try running it in XP Mode.

Turn it off and on again. That's the American way.

Pour whiskey on it until it restarts. That's the Irish way.

Strike it until it does what you want it to do. That was my father's way.

Argle. Still no good. I'm reaching the point where I'm considering giving up.

Is there another way to hack Arcanum? I tried a hex editor and that completely failed.

I answered yours and my own question here:

    http://terra-arcanum.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=17426

I was getting frustrated myself with vista not registering the OCX and DLL files so on the off chance i went to download.com, searched for a program that registers DLL's. I found a free program called OCX DLL Manager which did it with no problems at all, the editor loads up just fine. There's a couple of other programs on there but this one worked for me with no problems at all. I'm using Vista Home 32bit.

    Hope this helps.

Here's the trick. All the .DLL and .OCX files need to be registered to the system. This method is verified to work from Vista-Ten.

Extract all archive contents into "C:\Program Files (x86)\Arcanum\" directory.

Open an Administrative Command Prompt and enter the following commands:

    Regsvr32.exe "C:\Program Files (x86)\Arcanum\*.DLL"

    *And*

    Regsvr32.exe "C:\Program Files (x86)\Arcanum\*.OCX"

Ignore any errors, afterward the editor will launch normally.

Thanks for the tip Rowdy, people do occasionally come here looking for advice about save game editors so I'm sure it'll be of use. Welcome to the forums!

I find the older I get, the less I care about gravedigging. Maybe it's because I myself am closer to the grave, and thus feel more ambivalent towards it.

Either way, at this point these forums are part giant-poorly-formatted-shitty-knowledge-wiki, so there isn't much reason to get all uppity about it.

Sounds like somebody needs to do some past-due email notification unsubscription.

Philes, it has always been within our power to ignore the rules when it suits us.
