Bug?

So I was in the Masoleum with Geoffery to do the quest, and I saw the gem. I went over to pick it up after I killed the zombies... and it poofed. Dissapeared. It made the sound that the game makes when you pick something up, but neither my followers or I have it in our invintories. I really want Geoffery as a follower, but if I can't finish this quest, I dunno what to do. Any suggestions?

 

do you have an earlier save? similar things happened to me during Fallout 2, if not I think you can world ed the object to yourself but I'm not too sure.

It's a bug. There's not much you can do about it...but you're also not terribly far into the game.
