Yep. Also some others Kurosawa’s movies inspired famous westerns. Yojimbo inspired "A Fistful of Dollars" for example.

I dunno...I find that with a lot of the 'classic' movies, I didn't enjoy them as much as I was 'supposed to'. I guess it could have something to do with the fact I'm seeing them 20 years later so they've kind of lost their impact or something.

Now, that's not to say I didn't enjoy Apocalypse Now. I think it's really good, except for the ending, which is really fucking weird and makes little sense.

"I love the smell of napalm in the morning"

    "Charlie don't surf"

"Just give me back my board. It was a good board and i like it. You know how hard it is to find a good board Lance." died when seeing that

    "Hell a 6 foot peak"hahahah

The attack on the beach was the best scene in the whole film.

I don't know why but AN had immense effect on me. I was shaking when it finished. The only other occasion when something shown on TV affected me so strongly was CNN's live transmission of WTC attack (since it's a fresh wound still I want to make it clear that it's not my point to depreciate WTC attack by putting it next to a movie).

Apocalypse Now is based on Joseph Conrad's "Heart Of Darkness", partly explaining why it such a great movie. It was a great book. The ending of the book has also been much debated over.

I thought it was a great movie 'cause his wife had just been diced by Charlie "dig my tat" Manson. Much more disturbing than the book to me. Of course my parents took me to see it when it first came out so I was around six or seven , the sick bastards, so that might explain my reaction to the movie.

"Heart of Darkness" was about Africa, wasn't it? I think I might be getting it confused with some other book...

But I thought "Heart of Darkness" was that controversial book that was... er... controversial. Something about the characterization of blacks. Urgh, I don't remember now. I'm not even sure if I read it anymore. But the end of the book had that same "The horror... The horror..." line, right?

Heart of Darkness was set in Africa, yes, but I am not getting it confused.

THe book is about what happens when a civilised man is put into a situation where the rules don't apply. It's about the fact we're animals when you get right down to it.

There are a lot points that make it obvious that the film was based on the book. Perhaps the most obvious is the name of the central figure - Kurtz in both cases.

Well, biologically, we've known that for ages. Mentally, we're a cut above until we get landed in the wild in an unfamiliar situation. Just read Lord of the Flies for another example. I think it's pretty obvious Sheriff - when you can't deal with a situation you know about, you revert to the lowest denominator at which you can. If that makes sense. Basically, we devolve until we can cope.

    That's what I think anyway.

Lord of the Flies is a good comparison, I think. Maybe my use of the word "animal" was misleading. Kurtz doesn't devolve to a point where he does what is necessary to survive. He sets himself up a little empire amongst the savages. He preys on them, really. When confronted at the end of the story by civilised men, his depravity is brought home to him (perhaps because he sees himself through their eyes) and he sees the horror of what lies within the dark spaces of a man's - even a civilised man's - heart.
