The default is the new, more realistic smiley. It shows the true facial expressions. The stupid, inferior smileys of yore were rightfully replaced.

 

the old one was better. the smile is the central point of the image - there are no teeth or eyebrows to distract from it. And smiling is the point of a smiley, isn't it? the expression that it portrays is innocent and fun. the new one looks a little sheepish.

 

Give me mah ole' smiley back!

 

The old one would be better than the new one if it was smoothed out a little so that it looked less like a 3 year old's scrawl. Currently the default one looks more professionally done, even if a bit 'grinny'.
