Isn't the magnetic north pole created by the magnetic field surronding the earth? The north and south pole created by the fact that the core of the earth is essentially one big "bar" magnet, with all particles aligning in one direction or another?

Yes, but the core of the earth is round, meaning the pole could be anywhere along the surface of the Earth, and that it could rotate.

The giant hunk of iron serves as a stabilizer much the way the moon does the Earth. The Earth would spin in it's orbit without the moon, but it's axis would rotate erratically, so that what's the north pole today might be in the east tomorrow.

The magnetic field is caused by the Earth's metallic core, but the direction of the field is grounded by the iron in Hudson Bay.

We should pull that iron out, and move it elsewhere in the world... like the middle of Nevada.
