I just installed the latest version of A:WIP.

But from what I can tell, it isn't working.

The chest with the book in it at the start that you've mentioned isn't there, and I just can't seem to find any new locations, no matter how hard i try.

Could you please list the files one should have in the C/Sierra/Arcanum folder, so that I haven't missed anything (I've followed the readme but it's stil not working).

    I'm starting fresh.

Your list of contents... it's a bit curious. I don't have half of those items in mine, with or without having installed the latest patch (the 1.07 something, you know what I mean) and A:WIP.

So, reading the readme I figurd that the Arcanum5 file was supposed to be in the general sierra/arcanum directory, and the Patch1 in the sierra/arcanum/modules directory. Is this correct, and are there other files that should've appeared but haven't?

You are correct on the Arcanum5.dat and the Arcanum.patch1 placement.

The other files have appeared after installation of the 1.0.7.4 patch and extensive play-testing.

I can't remember for certain - and my other copies of Arcanum are no help in this - but I seem to recall the freshly installed and patched game starts with just over half that number of files.

Edit: Spiffy was having similar-enough problems while trying to use a warzed version of the game - and I've heard grumbles about the no-cd fix causing problems.

You are using a stock game, right?

Yep, I've got the stock game alright.

Do you know which files comes with the 1.0.7.4 patch? I mean, exactly which ones?

I also noticed that I can't play Arcanum in the fullscreen mode, even though I've installed the 1.0.7.4. Maybe there are files missing from that download? I'm just guessing...

OK - The patch comes with the Arcanum4.dat, the Arcanum.exe, EULA PATCH.txt, PatchReadme.txt, RemoveProtos.exe, ScrMaker.exe, Sierra.inf, Version.txt, WorldEd 1.0.7.4, and two folders marked Documents and Modules.
In the Modules folder is the Arcanum.patch0, and the Documents folder contains portrait.txt.

The patch also creates a full screen shortcut that should pop up when you exit the install. You should also be able to get to it (if you use Windows) going Start/programs/Sierra/Arcanum/ArcanumFullScreen.

    This is odd.

Alright... A trick that worked for Spiffy: Do a cold boot.

I seem to be missing the binkw32.dl file (or somesuch).

Could that have anything to do with it?

    Fresh install. Patch Installed.

I put Arcanum5.dat in the root Arcanum folder.
    I put Arcanum.patch1 in Arcanum/Modules.

I run Arcanum, it doesn't get past the loading screen without quitting.

    Wolfsbane: Possibly.

The binkw32.dll is needed to show the in-game movies (I think). I remember when I first tried to play the game I had to register a handfull of files with my computer.

If needed, here's what Xz wrote:

    As for your problem:

    Download these files:
    http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-f ... ml?binkw32
    http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?mss32

    place them in here: Code:
    c:\windows\system32

Go to your start menu, and click run. type in cmd and hit enter.

in the commandline window that just appeared, type:
    Code:
    regsvr32 binkw32.dll

    hit enter and type:
    Code:
    regsvr32 binkw32.dll

Hit enter again and try to load up Arcanum again.

    -Xz

Ambassador: It sounds like you have the locations right.
Have you had Arcanum installed on that computer before and did it play?

Yes, and yes. (To the installation and playing.)

    It's just recent actually

And I have windows 2000, gave that a try, and got a windows installer error. :/

If I'm reading your last line correctly, then you've tried running the 2000 installer disk but got an error message.

If that's the case, then this is beyond my capability to help you with.
I'm rather weak on OS debugging.

If I'm misunderstanding you and you were referring to the game, then here's a quick way to narrow the search.

Rename the Arcanum5.dat and the Arcanum.patch1 files with an X in front of the names.
Start Arcanum and select one of the pregenerated characters.
If you make it through Virgil's speech, then exit the game without saving.
Restart and try again with another character. This is in case the first time was a fluke.
If all goes well, then we've narrowed the problem to my hack.

It's Arcanum.patch1. The game loads with Arcanum5.dat in the root directory, but whenever Arcanum.patch1 goes into the modules directory, it is immediately booted following the loading.

    This is odd. Really odd.

I going to assume that you too have a stock game with the run disk - but yet the mod is acting just like it did with Spiffy's warzed version.....

This makes no sense. Let me think on it some more.

OK - After sleeping on this there's only one thing I can think of, and it's a long shot.

Download another copy of the hack and try again.
Perhaps a "hiccup" happened during the first download and that's what's causing the problem.

Is there a way to disable the Hand hack? I love this mod but doing a solo thief with melee/backstab at level 35 is killing me, I don't have master prowl yet so I can't prowl out of combat. That would be useless thought because I keep getting surrounded and backstab is useless because I can't get behind anyone.

Not without unpacking the Arcanum5.dat, then deleting or renaming the dlg and scr for the Hand.

I don't have the numbers handy at the moment.

BTW: You're probably going to hate the next release - The Hand now has combat skills to go with the swords, potions, and summoning.

    Papa likes.....

If you could, in your own time, give me those numbers, I will download the unpacker/packer and do this myself. Making a back-up of course.
Will there be a quick sign that I did this right or will I have to wait for the first encounter?

Thank-you in advance. Again no rush because I went back to a stock game to play a tech sword yielding gentleman type person.

BTW: I don't mind the revised Hand when playing any other character type, just this thief build is giving me issues with the hand. I look forward to your next release. I can't wait to see the completed Cattan Island.
