I wants one. No experience necessary. Utilize the latest version of DF (which has been out since 2008, DF2010 will be in development til 2011 at this rate). Objective: Whatever you want. Build monuments for your dwarf. Mint millions of coins. Losing is Fun.

One year interval turns. Sign up here! I will hold off on starting the fortress until we get sign ups, so I can name the dwarves after our players. You can sign up whenever you like, but this is a first-come, first-serve basis.

I most probably won't be a player, but from what I've heard about this game, naming one of your dwarves "Muro" always is good luck. Just thought I'll let you know.

If I knew how the interest in this would flow, I would have used the old thread. ;)

No matter, we'll play some sort of Democracy game, then. You can be the council of Elder Dwarves, and help lay out goals and things.

I will start this fortress tomorrow. I'm going to try to find a map with Magma, Rivers, and Hidden Fun Stuff.

If a voting/discussion-like council will be it, I'll be in. I can't play the game though.

    Grakelin: Try this:

    http://www.megaupload.com/?d=G1SU72HE (155 mb)

Billed as the world's largest dungeon, it has a lava river, underground lake, and plenty of room for hidden stuff.

    Oputhar: The Eternal Planets

It is the year 200. The Dwarven Civilization of the Reputed Guild was crushed by the Elven Civilization of the Bejeweled Raven four years ago, their final stronghold held by a single Dwarven Warrior. Morul Rainsacks slaughtered a quarter of the rampaging 450 Elves that day, including the leader of the Bejeweled Raven, but he ultimately fell. Since then, war has run rampant in the Dwarven Kingdoms. The Natural Board has fought with any and all Elves. The Natural Board fights wars where it never fought wars before. The once peaceful Dwarves have become pawns in the game of war that was once left to the Humans, Goblins, and Elves.

Some Dwarves want no part in these politics. We are those Dwarves. The new Queen, Bembul Leaguepicks, tentatively agrees with us. Although she is proud of her Father's conquests, she does not seek the same death and subsequent devouring at the hands of Elves.

With our request, and after contemplating the loss of her father and her husband in the Siege of Attacking, she has commissioned seven stalwart dwarves to build a Fortress that will stand the test of time. It will be necessary for us to one day be able to supply The Natural Board with the resources it needs to defend itself from the Elven Menace.

    Strike the Earth!

    ----

All Three Dwarven Civilizations are lumped together in the Northwest Corner of the World Map. The Elven Civilization of the Bejeweled Raven is conquering more and more territory, the veritable Mongols or Romans of this world. Our fortress may well end up in their lands.

Let's take our first vote: Should we be kind to the Elves? War with the Elves brings many challenges. But if we decide we cannot bear their presence, I can devise a system to kill their caravans.

EDIT: Here is our embark point.

I am told we can expect Adamantine, a Magma Pool, and a Chasm, in addition to the river. What Fun!

I am a bit concerned about how little sedimentary rock we have. Sedimentary rock is where we find our flux stone (used in the forging of steel. We will always have enough, don't worry), in addition to some more valuable metals like iron and gold. We only have it up in the corner there. Our miners will have to dig down

I brought Xiao Caity, Magikot, Muro, Wobbler, Zanza, FrostyMixi, and myself. Mesteut and Rroyo will be in the 1st wave of immigrants. Here's a rundown of each of your roles:

    Xiao: Proficient Miner and Weaver
    Magikot: Proficient Miner and Clothier

I decided to give the miners some weaving skills, since I haven't played with clothing a lot, and I had lots of skill points left over.

    Muro: Proficient Mason/Mechanic
    Wobbler: Proficient Carpenter/Grower
    Zanza: Proficient Grower/Brewer
    FrostyMixi: Proficient Grower/Cook
Grakelin: Proficient Mason/Novice Stonecrafter/Various Novice Administration Skills

Also, Muro likes Cave Spiders due to their mystery. And Magikot likes cats due to their aloofness. Magikot will quickly destroy this fortress.

Holy Jihad against the Elves! They are clearly the source of "all" evil!

If that's possible in some future, I mean.

Our Fortress Name: Dakugog Zoden ilul

    Treebane the House of Lords.

Our Group Name: The Alchemist Board (This was what we got by default. I thought it was a nice contrast to our Civilization)

Warring with the Elves is always possible. We can't attack them (Apparently, DF2010 will allow us to do this), but we CAN piss them off and let them throw themselves against us. They bring flying unicorns, it's really funny.

EDIT: I also brought 9 wardogs. Everybody gets one. There are two strays at the moment.

So, we decide to stop on the side of the mountain, next to this river. This is convenient! We will use the river as a moat, the entrance between our fortress and the outside world! As soon as I figure out how to tunnel through it without us all dying. Hmmm.

This mountain is made of Obsidian. Very interesting. I've devised a way for us to utilize the river as part of the entrance, and will post up an image as soon as we are done building it.

8th Granite: I wish I had studied more architecture in school. It has been eight days, and now it is raining, and we are not even inside our future home yet. I have just started construction on our entry bridge.

10th Granite: The bridge is done! The wall on the other side beckons. Magikot and Xiao will get to work immediately, despite how wet and slippery it is out here. Either Muro or myself will have to create an artificial floor so that trade caravans don't break themselves trying to cross.

Note that we are actually just off to the lower left corner of this image.

15th Granite: We are making considerable progress! We have almost filled out what will soon be our Trade Depot. I have decided that we are going to narrow the passage after this point and make the rest of the fortress firmly secure from Goblin sieges and the like. We will do this by crossing the river a second time. This will be a long-term project, so we will build temporary lodgings here.

27th Granite: I ordered the miners to dig a farm cavern nearby for the Growers. It's only temporary, of course. We will likely want to irrigate in the permanent fortress. Also, Wobbler is going to build ten beds, so we no longer have to sleep on the floor.

13th Slate (Month 2): Our temporary lodging is looking great, so I've set FrostyMixi to smooth out the floor leading into our fortress while the miners continue to dig the new area. I have a plan for our underground entrance which involves a waterfall.

28th Slate: The miners are making progress on the large vertical chasm. Meanwhile, Muro and I are constructing hatches, floodgates, and mechanisms. Soon, all will be in place! BWAHAAHAHA.

10th Felsite (Month 3): As soon as our array of various hatches and floodgates is complete, we will be ready to start construction on the bridge.

27th Felsite: Maybe I'm just getting cocky, but I've also decided to build a waterfall next to the bridge. This will look great! Hopefully the Queen won't question why the mug quota isn't being filled in our first Summer.

9th Hematite (Month 4): My God, we have made a terrible mistake! Magikot was standing on a hatch, digging out a space for our waterfall, and the hatch broke away with the ground he was digging, dropping him to the bottom of the pit (If only we had started building that bridge sooner!). It remains to see if he will survive.

Note that the red bits mean "mangled". He also has a "Moderately Wounded" upper spine. I fear for him.

Wobbler ran down there and carried him to the Barracks, where he will likely stay for quite some time. Incidentally, I just noticed that Wobbler and FrostyMixi are lovers. Did I mention FrostyMixi's dwarf was a female?

Xiao fears for her mining partner, and lover, Magikot.

2nd Malachite (Month 5): Well, Magikot is still alive. Whether he will ever walk again or not is currently unknown.

6th Malachite: Responsible leader that I am, I take the spare mining pick and help Caity dig. This is taking far longer than I'd expected.

28th Galena (Month 6): This is it! We're going to tap the river! Everything is in place! The only thing that can possibly go wrong right now is whoever creates the opening might get swept into the reservoir. Let's hope that doesn't happen.

1st Limestone (Month 7): Ah, the first day of Autumn. Signifying change, success, the last bit of work before we can take brief respite from our labours before beginning anew. Xiao Caity will now tap the river. God speed, Xiao. The stakes are even higher than your lover's: The staircase up has been completely sealed off, so if you're swept out of here...

Xiao creates an opening. Now the tricky part. Run Xiao Run!

Water gushes out, pooling at Xiao's feet as she flees. She makes her Kingdom proud, getting through the Obsidian doors and locking them tightly behind her before it can sweep her away.

And our glorious entry hall is complete! Of course, the waterfall won't be there all the time. I wish we had made the pit deeper. Then again, that would have meant certain death for Magikot, instead of invalidity. Well, it can't be helped. When the waterfall IS present, it will be beautiful. And any invaders are sure to drown.

3rd Limestone: Bad news. It was FAR from deep enough.

The floor hatches have sealed shut this opening, but unless we like swimming, nobody is going to be doing anything in there. This is most unfortunate.

4th Limestone: The water is overflowing! There must be a leak somewhere! We will have to seal off this entire area. This will forever be a lesson in our own hubris.

    10th Limestone:

Grakelin: So, Muro, did you put up that wall yet?
Muro: Wall? Grakelin, I've been telling you all week, I'm on my break. I'm not putting up any walls.
Grakelin: What? WHAT? By Id Steelprice the Blueness of Caves, man! The water is almost upon us! I'll put the bloody thing up myself!

We barely get the walls up before the water is sloshing against them. Muro was apparently too tired to do so. Probably an Elven spy.

16th Limestone: The Outpost Liaison has arrived!

26th Limestone: The Outpost Liaison is indifferent toward our progress. We sell 810 dwarfbucks worth of Obsidian Mugs, trading for a quantity of cloth. He seems a bit perturbed that our attempts to build the permanent fortress have been in vain.

13th Sandstone (Month 7): While building a new entrance to our primary fortress, Xiao found this.

It is a bottomless chasm! Perhaps not all hope is lost for our waterfall after all...

The chasm extends about two stories higher than the entrance to our fortress, but is indeed completely underground. There is no discernable bottom. Apparently, creatures live down there, namely a giant mole. Also, we can see ore (silver and copper) in the side of some of the walls, very deep down.

    Praise the miners!

27th Sandstone: Immigrants. Ten of them altogether. They will be helpful in constructing our chasm bridge. Among them are Mesteut the Leatherworker and Rroyo the Gem Setter.

11th Moonstone (Month 10): Watch this, it's gonna be so cool.

Caity breaks open the wall of our failed project. Then, the water flows through this tunnel.

I think it was Rroyo who so kindly left that pick there. I accidentally enabled the miner profession for all my dwarves instead of the architecture profession, and he got excited.

Then, the water flows out the hole in the side of the chasm, creating this waterfall, in turn creating a mist which rises up around the (currently unfinished) bridge above. Awesome.

1st Granite, 202: Winter went by fairly uneventfully. I've set out some goals for this year, which include finding the magma pool that all this obsidian indicates must exist. More importantly, though, the miners are set to begin carving out our grand dining hall. The main fortress has begun construction!

You will be in immigrant wave 3.

10th Granite: An Elven Caravan From the Bejeweled Raven has arrived. What should we do?

23rd Granite: Somebody snuck in and stole our Steel Battle Axe. Now we can't cut down trees, at least until we forge a new axe or trade for one.

3rd Slate: The council convenes to decide what to do about the Elves.

There are basically two choices: Favorable and Unfavorable. Unfavorable will be a showing of our aggression, wherein we try to offer them wood and they get pissed off and leave. Favorable will be trading them a bunch of mugs for some seeds and things.

Your wishes are my command: We go to war with the Elves.

I offer them some wood. They are displeased.

17th Slate: A third immigration wave! This one has 18 more dwarves, making us 35 strong!

We're going to need to hurry production on residence.

20th Slate: We need a Sheriff, so we give the role to one of the newcomers, Wolfsbane idathrovod. He doesn't really have any experience, but that's okay.

Also among the immigrants is Arthgon Ithnil. He is a very unskilled and untrained dwarf. Perfect fit for a soldier!

Hematite 12 (Month 4, Year 2): One of our citizens (Obok Zonardes) was possessed! He went and made a Tower-cap Cup, pictured below.

Everybody agrees this was a complete waste of time.

22nd Hematite: Arthgon spotted a kobold thief. He and the marksman who he works with chased it down the brook and killed it.

14th Malachite: We traded all our mugs to some Human Traders - In exchange for a new anvil!

Things are coming along nicely. I will post up an image of our fortress soon.
