Hey Al, just wanted to say "hi" since I never met ya. I have a question for you, why is it that Philippines is spelled with a ph and filipino is spelled with an f? Sorry for derailing the thread BTW.

Ask and thou shalt receive an answer. (Of course, when that answer involves a history question, and there is a historian handy, an answer comes quicker :D )

    Thus:
Not long after the islands became a Spanish possession, it was decided to name them after a Spanish monarch. That monarch was King Felipe II. The archipelago thus became known as Las Islas Felipinas (the Islands of Felipe). The accepted Anglicized (English) version of Felipe was Philip, so most English speakers treated “Las Islas Felipinas as merely “the Philippines. At the end of the Spanish-American War, the Treat of Paris stipulated that, “Spain cedes to the United States the archipelago known as the Philippine Islands. Note that the treaty did not say “the islands known as Las Islas Felipinas, which is rather curious. This seems to be the first “official use of the Anglicized version of Felipinas. At any rate, because the U.S. was the colonial master of the archipelago going into the 20th century, “Philippines was destined to become the new standard.

The Spanish influence remains however. Because the Spanish called the islands Las Islas Felipinas, the people of the islands became known as Filipinas or Filipinos.

Hope that clears things up for ya.

Philippines is the name of the country. Filipino is the nationality, the race, or should we say, the people itself. Pilipino is the language we use. The Philippine language consists of several dialects including Tagalog, Bisaya, Cebuano, Ilokano, etc. Our currency is the Philippine Peso. Very much different from the Mexican Peso.

And so, as it has been foretold, the bane of the forum returned once again, to consume sanity with it's wrath.

Thanks for that info, Luchaire. I'm Flip, yet I never knew the reason Phillipines and Filipino were spelled differently.

My grandmother was Bisayan and my grandfather was Ilokano. I never learned the language, though.

I'm like a quarter Filipino myself. I knew they were spelled differently, but not why. And I skipped Luchaire's post, so that I may remain ignorant on the mattter even longer!

The world proffession is still practive in very village, town and city in the world no matter it legal of illegal. Makeing something like prostitution illegal does not end the practive of prostitution, than funny thing there is no federal law against as far as I know only local or state law against it.

Saudic Arabian pride itself as being free of prostitution , has prostition taken place on than small scale as long as it isnot noticealy the Inman isnot going to say anything. You need to be decreet when picking one up. Saudic has two
police the religious police which nobody like as they are religious bigot and the regulate local police who are more worldly in outlook like any regulate police forces the world over. All the woman prostitute know they must be decreet about how they do they bussien as not to upset the government. Most Saudic Arabian are modrate moslum and they arenot anti America just anti impertial.
