    I have loved this game since childhood and recently decided playing again.

    I'm wondering if playing online works at all?

    sadly i don't think it is possible without using 3rd party software, something like hamachi, reason being is that arcanum operated on the world opponent network. which valve shut down in 2004.

    as much as i want to shed a tear over the loss of which... I just can't bring myself to do it after seeing how much steam has brought to PC gamers }:

    It's possible to play online through MatchMaker, however atm there are no servers online.

    As you already mentioned, it's also possible to play via Hamachi, so I'll only recommend to check-out the ArcanumClub.ru forums, since they have a subforum dedicated only to online playing. You can find there at least two dedicated hamachi servers, multiplayer modules, tutorials and folks to play with.
