Well good luck to all the individuals participating in this event.

I don't possess flavor in my words, so I ain't gonna participate, but I have never heard about it before either, so meh.

So what is this Nano-thing. I'm not expending the finger strength to look something up on Wikipedia I'll most likely not have any interest in to begin with. Let's just call it fleeting curiosity and stop there.

You should be able to guess from the the name (NaNoWriMo) and the fact that Xiao is writing a novel for it that it's a writing contest. You have to contribute at least, or exactly 50 000 words, and the winner gets something nice.

    Most probably.

I can be wrong, but this is my assumption from the thread.

NaNoWriMo stands for the National Novel Writing Month. You have to write 50,000 words in a month, which is pretty much the length of books such as Brave New World and The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. I honestly don't think you win anything even if you do reach that amount of words, it's really just an excuse to increase the amount of text floating around on the tubes.

It's nice to know there are others who don't care about writing in this thread!

Not to be a dick or anything, I find amateur writing, on the whole, to be mostly painful to read. Though, I should point out that most of my experience in this area is fanfiction. And as we all know, fanfiction attracts it's share of losers who have no business breathing, much less writing.

Yes. And then to shamelessly promote further mediocrity, they turn already shitty ideas worse by provoking people into squirting them out in an unrealistic, 30 day time frame.

A lot of participants in the NaNo use it as way to get past writer's block, or a reason to write something they've wanted to write for years but never gotten anywhere with, or to start something they know they'll never finish in the 30 days. I fully acknowledge that my NaNo last year, although finished, sucked donkey balls, and I'd never dream of getting it published.

(And I have had short works published before, so don't start on the 'nobody would want to read your work' shit, because then I'll have to administer a smackdown and I'm just too fucking tired right now. Besides, I got to do it to nigh-on 100 people at once earlier in the year, and I don't think anything will ever match the sheer pleasure of seeing 100 people go 'Fuck, she's gonna make me regret that high school shit' at once.)

For anyone who thinks 30 days is unrealistic, I point them to Michael Moorcock and his ability to write complete novels in 3. They're not always good, but the fact remains... 3 days. Holy FUCK that's crazy.

The prizes are small but nice. This year, everyone who finishes in the 30 days can get a free copy of their book printed up by a company who sponsors the NaNo. Plus usually you get mugs and stickers and things. I find the knowledge that I can actually do it far more important than the prizes.

I've wanted to write up my version of Arcanum for a while but never have because if it was any good I'd want to try and publish it and I wouldn't be able to because Sierra owns Arcanum.

Damn vicious cycles and their endlessness.

I've always wanted a professionally printed book authored by yours truly in my bookshelf.

Hell, I'm in. I'll write an epic about that time when the frenzied Jains attacked Swamp Base 7 and nearly took it.

I'm not a writer, but I'd love to see some new Arcanum fanfic. Or Firefly fanfic.

The main reason fanfics (or fanfucks, as I like to call them) suck, is the addition of the writer's own characters based on the same universe as the actual characters, but the writer's characters are SO MUCH BETTER at doing the same shit the originals do that they overshadow what made the original so great in the first place.
    God damn Mary Sues.

Fucking Mary Sues. (Usually literally.) I ran my main characters through about five Mary Sue tests this year - most of them barely even pinged, and the only one who came close to being a Mary Sue is the comic relief.

Last years characters... I had at least two Mary Sues. I am so ashamed of last year's book. I didn't plan, I just wrote, and it showed.

 Okay, that one's kinda deserved.

But if you think it's easy, I'm happy to challenge you to join in this year. Come on... If it's so easy, surely you can do it.

(And in case you're wondering what it's like to verbally bitch-slap 100 people at once, the sensation is easily described in one sentance: 'Why doesn't my fuck-buddy give me orgasms like that?')
