The following is an object lesson/anecdote on why it's a bad idea to start upgrading your computer around Chinese New Year and Valentine's Day...

Last Thursday, the 6th of February, I ordered some stuff online from a store in the same city as me. Feeling rather lazy, and figuring to go the whole hog, I also decided to have it delivered by courier, as it wasn't much extra, and I couldn't be bothered driving out to the store half an hour away.

    I should have.

It turns out that the web site was a little inaccurate, in that two of the parts I ordered weren't in stock. I was informed that one of the parts wasn't in on Monday, when I called up to check when my order was going to come. The parts were due the arrive the next day, I was told, and I could expect it either Tuesday or Wednesday morning.

It didn't come Tuesday, and on late Wednesday, it still wasn't there. So I called up again, and was told I could expect it first thing tomorrow morning. On Thursday morning, it wasn't there, and then I noticed an email that had been sent to me, informing me that a second part was also out of stock. I called up, and found that due to the Chinese New Year, shipment had been delayed until late next week. I cancelled that part, got a refund, and waited some more, having been promised it would be out on the next courier.

Friday, it still wasn't here. A call in the morning informed me that the couriers had it, and they would call back with an expected delivery time. Two and a half hours later, it still hadn't come. After lunchtime, I called again, and was told the courier wasn't answering, and they would call back when they got an answer themselves (the store, by the way, was very helpful and friendly, the courier was the problem here). After speaking to some people at my house, I realised that it was Valentine's Day, and my order was being delayed because of that. I can deal with that, even though I'm not happy about it.

Then, very late on Friday afternoon, I get a call from the shop. The courier has just returned my damaged order. Turns out someone had run over it with a forklift, and crushed pretty much everything inside. Of course, being my day, I had the last of their stock of a certain part, which wasn't going to be restocked for another two weeks. I changed the order again, and was told I can definitely expect my stuff to arrive on Monday morning.

    We'll see if that happens.

HOLY! That must really suck, Jar! That is one of the worst stories I have ever heard! :-o

BTW, they did refund your damaged part, right?

BTW2, what company did you use? I wanna know so I don't make a mistake when I order my parts! :D

xento, you live on a native american reserve somewhere in America. I live in Brisbane and bought - as I mentioned - from a local shop. I doubt you'll be wanting to do your shopping there.

However, here is a link - www.coolpc.com.au They specialise in cooling gear for computers. I needed a heat sink and fan for my cpu, a northbridge cooler for the motherboard, and two case fans.

The time is 9.55 am and the courier still hasn't arrived. I'll update throughout the day when I remember, until THE DAMN COURIER ARRIVES!

Edit - Arrived at 10.25 am, along with a box of complimentary caffeinated peppermints. Damn there's a lot of those little bastards! I also cannot speak highly enough of the Express post system in Australia. I cannot speak badly enough about our courier system.

The story has a happy ending - 6 to 7 hours after my stuff arrived, my computer had Windows XP installed, and everything fully working, and my CPU overclocked 300 mHz no problems. Going to go for more tomorrow :).

Although, I was really fucking worried when it wouldn't boot initially, after only an hour or so I sorted that problem out :). My biggest problem was getting my old hard drive out of my old computer, which I couldn't do, as the screw had been overtightened, and the teeth on the screw eroded very quickly, and eventually all but disappeared. So I also had to buy a new 80gig hdd.

    Nothing wrong with 80 gigs!

If you absolutely had to, though, you could just plug in your old and new computer, and have the data cables from your new hooked into the back of your old hard drive, with the old case and power supply giving it power, and transfer out whatever you wanted.

Fuck that, I've set it up in my brother's room, and hooked them up with a handy 20m crossover cable.
