    It's obviously some sort of beat the fad thing - if has a futuristic looking name before everyone else, then when they become fashionable, he's ultra-fashionable, for beating everyone else by at least 10 years!

    Of course, this plan relies on futuristic names like his becoming fashionable, but then again, l337 speak and alt caps are popular among the idiots and denizens of the web, so anything could happen I suppose...

    Er.. what DOES |337 stand for actually? I've seen it lots of times here but everyone seems to know what it is, so i've never asked.

    The way I see it, once upon a time, some guy thought it would be really cool to replace letters with numbers and other characters. He thought he was really cool, really elite, hence l337 speak was born.

    I always figured it came out of pager codes that people used to send text messages back before most people had alpha-numeric pagers or cell phones.
