I've played this game plenty of times as a gun slinger (about 4 in the past 3 years), and I’ve alwayesd been able to get firearms mastery training. My current character is a half-elf with a custom background that gives a bonus to firearms (it takes the place of “raised by snack handlersâ€), and I have the perquisites (to my knowledge) for the nice little halfling to appear (I even used the save game editor to raise my perception to see if that was the problem) but to no avail. I also pick-pocketed the looking glass rifle from the NPC, if that makes any difference. Is it my custom backround? Or something else? Is the halfling not appearing a known bug? Should I move my saves an reinstall? Thanks for any answers.
Hmm. I seem to recall that one time I talked to William about the Mastery quest before I could activate it. IE: he told me my skill was not enough. Later when I returned with full skill I couldn't bring up the topic. Hard to tell what your problem might be. You might try wipping up another custom background real fast that gives a large bonus to perception or firearms so that you can quickly rush another character there and see if you get the problem again. If so, it might show that you need to do a "reinstall" or "repair" of the game files.
Well I reinstalled the game and put back in my saves: Didn’t work. Started a new character without a unique background : Didn’t work Erased all of the custom backgrounds: Didn’t work. I’m using the patched version and I’m honestly at a loss. It also seems the magic chests stock the same stuff as the last game which is kinda weird. Any suggestions?
Make a new character and move on. Or since your using the editor, if you want mastery that bad just edit the character and give it to yourself.
I did. This was my second half-elven gunslinger (and that’s ignoring the “test†gnome I made who also did not work with that damn quest) . Same ol'shit. I use the editor for my NPCs primarily, I like my PCs to be holistic (roleplaying reasons). Has nobody ever had a similar problem?
Could that be the problem? Elves and half-elves have inherent penalties on tech skills (of which Firearms is one). Wouldn't it make sense if elves and half-elves were incapable of achieving Firearms mastery because of that? You will always be a fraction of a point short of the necessery prerequisites. Never send an elf to do a dwarf's job, I say. SNACK handlers as in cooks?
I havn't played a Half Elf in a long time, do they actually have the penalty of not having a full 5 points like elves do? I wish Raised by Snack Handlers really was a background.
Elves have -2 ranks on all tech skills, half-elves have -1 rank. -2 DX due to obesity, +2 CH due to refined table manners?
+2 CH due to refined table manners +2 IN, for remembering recipies -2 DX, due to Obesity Bonus to haggle skill from growing up as the child of a business owner. +5 to all cooking skills
I've never heard of anyone having this problem. I'm pretty sure that being a half-elf isn't your problem. Allbeit I'm not positive, now that I think about it. If the gnome didn't work, and a reinstall didn't work, then maybe your disk itself is in bad shape? :/ Horrible thought.
for the record (and because I have forgotten) do you need to have 5 full ranks in a skill before you can do a mastery quest or was it just anything more than 4 full ranks?
I know you need five full ranks for persuasion mastery. I don't remember if you do for Gunsmithy do. The same for melee/dodge, ect.
I hadn't played arcanum for a number of years, but I do remember being able to get the mastery as a half-elf before. Perhaps I'm just insane, but I’ll try a "test" human character (there was no such luck with the gnome). my apologies. I'm dyslexic and disgraphic (you should see my posts before I run them through a spell checker) and I do my best, but sometimes late at night I slip. You can't expect much from someone who is one twelfth retarded, can you? :stoner2: Though the obese background would be pretty interesting.
Obese background would be a lot like snake handlers. Greater body mass means greater resistance to poison but you lose some beauty. Probably need to knock constitution and speed down a notch as well. Maybe a point of wp added from the discipline developed by constantly pursuing weight loss diets? You would also require large armor.
I'd say a reduction to willpower do your loss of control when you're around food and inability to STICK WITH weight loss diets.
that's what I thought first too, but arcanum backgrounds need to sort of balance out stat wise. So I'm assuming a sort of "recovering obese" character that's still fat but is finally knuckling down to fix it. without balancing it out you'd lose: beauty constitution willpower dexterity dodge prowl and only gain poison resistance. hrmm not reallty a suitable arcanum background
I may be as insane as Timur, but I also seem to remember having a very pretty half-elven lass gaining the Firearms mastery. Don't remember if that was pre- or post-patch, though, in case that would matter.
Well if you completed the gods quest and gained Velorien's blessing you'd have the skill necessary to do it.
How about this: Raised by snack handlers. You were raised by the owners of a famous restaurant chain. The morbid obesity, caused by the constant sampling of food, took a heavy toll on your appearance (-4BE) and physical abilities (-2DX, -2 ranks on Dodge, -2 ranks on all Thieving skills). You are also slower than most people (-1 Speed) and tend to get tired faster (-10% FT). On the bright side, however, your humongous body can take a bigger punch (+2CN, +5% to all resistances), and the impact of your heavy fists can be devastating (+5% Critical Hit chance for melee attacks). People tend to judge you by your less than pleasant looks (-10 reaction), but you are accustomed to it and can handle yourself well in the society (CH+2, +2 ranks on all Social skills). You also require a larger size armor than normal people of your race (medium armor for minute races, large armor for median races).
