Okay Calis, I've been having some problems with the board - it's not marking any posts as read anymore, even though it has before. Posts that havnen't had a comment made for a week are still being marked as unread for me. It's not really a big issue, but still...
This was a recurring problem with the forum software. Last I checked, which was a long time ago, it still hadn't been resolved. Hmm... I don't even know what the current version of phpBB is. Maybe I'll go check out their board and see what's up. If I see the fix for this problem there, I'll post it here in this thread.
I noticed that, too. Ever since I wiped clean the "sessions" table it's doing that. I'm pretty sure I didn't change anything else... it was working properly for me, before.
Well, it restored itself (when you log in, it tracks your "session"). Also, I don't think it's supposed to have any impact on the "marked read" feature... so no, I don't think I can manually fix this until I have at least an idea of why exactly it stopped working. And I'll have to dig deep into the phpBB code for that, I think.
Okay, not knowing how your system works (or php at all, actually) I can't tell you the ins and outs, but on a hunc I deleted my TA cookies, and I believe it fixed the bug you are discussing for me. I guess there is either a reference to the cookie in the session table (or vice versa) or the the session table has nothing to do with it. Anyone who wants to get the brown cogs working again (to show which threads were already on TA during your last visit, take these steps: Go to Start Menu/Search/Find Files or folders In the left hand pane of the window that opens, In the textbox labelled "Search for Files or Folders Named:" type 'phpbb' Click the button labelled "Search Now" In the right hand pane of the window, Select the files whose names end with '@phpbb[1].txt' and '@phpbb[2].txt' Press the delete key Click the "Yes" button in the dialogue that appears This will re-initialise the House of Lords for you. When you next visit, all cogs will be grey. After that, I believe it should work correctly. PLEASE NOTE: Deleting these cookies may bugger up other sites using PHPBB. If in doubt, don't delete the files above. Please don't go and break things then shout at me  FYI: On a guess I'd say you probably only need to delete one of the cookies - the one that's causing the problem - if you can be arsed to work at which one, go with that. <font size=-1>[ This Message was edited by: Sheriff Fatman on 2001-12-08 07:01 ]</font>
Damn - now I'm not sure whether the deletion of your cookies DOES fix the problem. It MAY just re-initialise the cogs once, and everything still go out of whack from there.
Deleting the cookie seems to have done the trick for me... shame on me for not thinking about that. I'm guessing it had very little to do with the sessions thing after all.
I deleted my cookies a while ago, and I still have the same problem. From what I can tell, all the phpBBs from version 1.4.x on down had weird post tracking. I went down to the hacks board and found a hack that supposedly featured better post tracking. It was supposed to add a new table to the database, and blah blah blah... Problem was, the download link was messed up, and didn't point to the right file. Couldn't for the life of me find the correct one. BTW - Have the admins thought about upgrading to 1.4.4? It seems there are a few security bugs, mainly concerning backdoor access to admin accounts. Supposedly running or upgrading to phpBB v1.4.4 will take care of this. Oh yeah, and while I was there, I checked out the phpBB v2 RC1 test board. It looks niiiice.
Well Milo, we already hacked in the extra security before 1.4.4 came out (we were already hit by the admin exploit once...) so we should be good as far as security is concerned. I really don't want to upgrade until v2.0 final is out, to tell you the truth. We've made a couple of modifications to the scripts, and they aren't all well documented so it might be a bit of a hassle to port 'em over to a new version. I don't want to do that unless it's really worth it.
