A bit of help for a customized background

Hi everybody ,
I tumbled upon this forum a few days ago, happy to discover fellow Arcanum fans!

And now that i have a problem with the creation of a new background for my character, i hoped that someone could help me a bit .

Basically, here is what i've done until now, with wordpad:

- in the "gameback.mes", in data/mes, i put, on the last line:
{1077}{Scion du Clan Forgemartel

Vous appartenez au Clan nain Forgemartel, qui a disparu de la surface de la terre depuis plus de 200 ans. Sa forteresse souterraine ancestrale est scellee, ses membres disperses par le vent de la guerre et du changement. Vous avez été eleve dans l exil, mais vore famille a réussi a vous transmettre les connaissances et les traditions les plus sacrees de votre clan. Vous avez herite du talent legendaire des Forgemartel pour les sciences, la forge et l'artisanat (Dexterite +2) ainsi que de leur robustesse d'ame et de corps (Force +1, Volonte +1) et de leur fascination pour les decouvertes (Intelligence +1). La majeste et l'anciennete de votre lignee rejaillit sur votre personnalite et rares sont ceux qui osent vous manquer de respect (Charisme +2). Cependant, la complexite, la richesse et la rigidite des enseignements que vous avez suivis vous ont detournes de nombreuses activites que les Nains considerent comme deshonorables et vous vous montrez donc completement incompetent dans ces domaines (Arc, Attaque sournoise, Discretion à -3). Par la force des choses, vous avez du survivre dans un monde ou les humains sont devenus omnipresents. Grace a votre curiosite inssasiable et a votre ouverture d esprit, vous avez reussi a perfectionner vos talents d'orateur (Persuasion +1) et de marchand (Marchandage +1). Vous esperez ainsi mieux pouvoir les comprendre et vous faire une place parmis eux. Votre coeur brule du désir de voir le Clan reprendre sa place legitime sur Arcanum. Vous poursuivez votre propre quete, a la recherche de la malediction qui s'est abattu sur les votres. Vous etes persuadés au fond de vous, meme si vous repugnez a l'admettre, que cette fois, la renaissance et la prosperite des Forgemartels ne pourra eclore sans l aide des autres races et vous etes donc determine a vous faire des amis fideles.

- in the "backgrnd.mes", in data/rules, i put, on the last line:
{790}{1077}
{791}{359}
{792}{DWM}
{793}{400}
{794}{}

- in the "effect.mes", in data/rules, i put, on the last line:
{359}{haggle +1, persuasion +1, backstab -3, bow -3, prowling -3, ch +2, dx +2, in +1, st +1, wp+1}


I let a space between each of my background data and the last "official data".

The problem is, when i try to select this background during the character creation, the game crashes.

I tested lot of workarounds, checked each line etc... but i didn't succeed at finding my error.


I hope someone could take a look at this mess (mes?!^^) and tell me where is the problem.

I'm hardly an expert on new backgrounds, but if you did an exact copy and paste of gameback line 1077, the problem would be the lack of an } at the end of your description.

Add the bracket and try again.

As a custom background builder myself, I concur with rroyo.

Also your text is might long, which may not all be displayed.

Have you also noticed it is an extremely powerful background? Harldy and negatives, which means it is not very balanced. Even the Iron Clan dwarves are not that good.

Also you might want to consider adding age to the character seeing the character 'surfaced' after 200 years.

Yes it's a rather powerfull background, i realize that . It's my third or fourth time that i begin (and finish) arcanum, so i'm ready to sacrifice a bit of balance in order to try new things .

It always annoyed me that most of the backgrounds were absolutely not fitted for what i wanted (and i didn't want a "powerfull" background, just one which could enhance the skills and caracteristics i use and penalize the other).

I thought that sacrificing entirely three competences would more or less "make the deal" for some positive caracteristics adjustement .

In fact, it's the Clan of my character which disappeared 200 years ago . The character himself is sort of a nomad, wandering on Arcanum, searching his roots!
