I was curious as to how much weigh one stone is. For a while, I thought that one stone was 14 ounces. I had it half right. One stone is 14 POUNDS! Basically, if your character has a strength of 20 in Arcanum, they're capable of hefting 140000 pounds of crap with them. Sure, it slows them down, but it's 70 tons, for God's sake! That's the equivalent of carrying a large bulldozer with you everywhere you go, or maybe a charter bus filled to capacity. Unless Troika decided to scale down the stone to equal something like 10 grams, that's still 100 kilos. Then again, 100 kilos is actually doable. I can see someone carrying that around, with some effort, of course. Does anyone know what the stone of Arcanum equals in our terms?

Huh. Thanks, Bunny. 1000 pounds is still quite a bit to be carrying around.

Yes, but on the other hand, your character is EXTREMELY strong. 20 STR ain't nothing, you know.

I think they simply used stones so it would fit in with the Victorian theme but chose to ignore the actual weight of a stone for the sake of having nice round numbers.
Armour which weighs 7 stone 3 pounds and 4 ounces would be realistic but would also be annoying to try to keep track of weights if you are unfamiliar with the imperial system.

I can understand that. My main problem is that I don't have the Arcanum Manual, so I didn't know what kind of stones they were using, or if their stones were, in fact, something completely new. I'm glad that was cleared up. I mean, even if the stones were 14 ounces, like I had originally thought, that's still damn near close to 10,000 pounds.
I didn't know stones were being used as a weight in Victorian times. I thought it was mainly during the medieval period, before we had a way of making exact measurements in weight.

    Um...stones are still used today.

e.g. If someone asks me how much I weigh, I'll reply "11 and a half stone".

Well fine, if you're gonna be like that, then. Right now I'm basing the use of "stone" as a measurement on how often I've heard it in everyday conversation. To this day, 19 years into my life, I have never heard the word stone being used other than to describe a large rock. If you use stone as a measurement, I'm sure you're considered to be a little eccentric.
I'm going to go search on google or something to see how often stones are mentioned in normal dialogue.
    edit*
OK! I looked it up, and stone is most commonly used in the UK, or in the fishing industry. Also, it can be used to describe your personal weight, thought it's rare. Alright. I still maintain that I have never heard it in any part of America that I've visited, ever. Go ahead and use it though, TONGSyaBASS, there's a chance I may meet you and hear it for the first time. I just don't think it's necessary for me to use it. I already have several other options to express my weight.

And by that you mean be British?

Yes but I assure you it has nothing to do with using stones.
I don't know anyone in the UK who doesn't use stones. Even my girlfriend (originally from Illinois) has picked up the habit.

Well, to be honest, I had no idea that you happened to be British. My first comment was all sarcasm, you'd be hard pressed to find any real convictions in there. So, apparently, using stones as weight in the UK is commonplace? Well, alrighty then. I learned something new.

Surely my constant use of the words "bloody" and "old chap" (not to mention my perpetual moustache twirling and monocle wearing) were enough of a clue?

Of course, now I see it. For a while I thought you were just playing the part of a silent movie villain. :p

Its true about the Brits using stones to measure their weigth.
I though it was kinda weird when at first, but you get used to it,
I guess. Its just one of the many peculiarities that I've noticed.

For instance, mum instead of mom; Holiday instead of vacation,
garden instead of yard. Thats the normal stuff, half the time
I cant understand what they're saying. Not that I'm alone, cause
my English friends dont understand them either!? I dunno, but
I think they mix in Gaelic or something just to mess with me....

I've decided that us Yanks dont speak 'English', but rather 'American'.
Its high time we had a language of our own (which we do already),
and actually call it what it is.

Cockney rhyming slang...I've never heard a more confusing method of speech. Another language, OK, I can deal with that. But just using words that RHYME with another word?
Yes, for quite some time, we Americans have been creating our own version of what used to be similar to English. We're a melting pot; everyone wants to live here. I don't know why; our educational systems are pretty lackluster, about 68% of all Americans are obese, we've got more crime in certain cities than some foreign countries, and it seems we're so prude in this place that many people think keeping condoms away from schools will keep kids fom having sex. You know what keeps kids from having sex? Nothing. Nothing will keep kids from having sex, which is why they should have access to things that will at least keep them semi safe from disease and unwanted pregnancies. What really determines how likely it is that a child will have any type of sex in this country is how they're brought up, and what they decide. Yes, if a kid has sex, it is their fault. If a kid hurts another kid, it is their fault. Sure, how a child is raised has some bearing on how they develope as a person, but what really shapes who they are is just that; who they are. There are too many ass-hats in America blaming the popular media and video games for violence in our schools and cities, and all of these rampant sex crimes. Why doesn't anyone (in power) see that it's the perpetrator's own fault. You know what i think? I think if more people owned guns, if more people watched violent movies, and if more people became comfortable with their own sexuality, there would be less crime in America. Stop blaming media. Start looking in the mirror.

Literacy is a problem around the world. And yeah our schools suck, especially when compared to the Japanese, and even todays UK schools. But thats no reason to quit having sex. Not that sex solves problems, as much as it probably creates them. After all, every war on the planet since the dawn of creation has been because of two things: Resources, and Women. Mostly women. Whether they compelled their men to go kick some other guy's ass, or your tribe ran out of available women, and you had to raid the village next door. But I'm not knocking the ladies, they're worth it.
And we could throw stones at the neighbors when we run off with their women!

The real question is, Does art (media) imitate life, or does life imitate it?[/img]

Amglish. Like "Spanglish", but not made into a movie with Adam Sandler.
Well, actually, we're not really America, just one part of the "Americas." So....Unglish, Statese, Quinquage-lic (for the fifty states), or, my favorite, Ungan.

I'm not saying 'Hey, be celibate!" I'm just saying something needs to be done other than trying to scare kids away from sex. Scaring doesn't work on everyone. It's why we still have skydivers and bungie jumpers and bull riders and people who voted green.
