...did Troika even sell enough to cover their development expenses? I just wanted to know. 'Cause I'm quite certain that Arcanum didn't sell so well...

It's quite strange that games like NWN and Morrowind are sold in major volumes, while Arcanum, which is so much better, never got popular.

It's truly a weird world we're all living in...

I dont think they advertised it well. I mean I never heard of it until a friend told me about it. He just stumbled across it at BestBuy.

While I read several game magizines on an infrequent bassis, I first heard of the game from a review in the New York Times. Victorian setting, magic & tech, alignment based on your actions, & an admision by the reviewer (who has seen every game printed on his desk) that he was hooked made me rush right out & buy it. It was far from brand new at that point.

The Arcanum trailer was unbelivably dumb - showing almost all the cutscenes from the game with hardly any frames of actual gameplay.

Of course there's also this little thing called piracy...

I read somewhere where there was over 200K copies sold. Not a bad figure but not a great one either.

When I bought Arcanum, it was still arouund $50 or so. How long a span did that 200k account for? Is it the TOTAL so far? If so, maybe 100K or so sold for $50, 50K-75K or so for $30-$40, and probably 25K or so for $20.

Sierra didnt advertise it well. My friend introduced this game to me and i was surprised that the game is so great but i have never heard of it before. And Arcanum is in my opinion better than Diabolo but more people have played D2 than Arcanum. I think trailers and ad really help a game to be popular

I never heard about the game till I came across it at K-Mart. Got it for X-Mas.

P.S. Did you notice that this topic was old?
