I think it would be cool if there was a undead race because you could have many different types e.g. undead dwarf, undead human, ect
you get all Black Necromatic spells to start off with.
you can not be to good but you scare off some monsters because you are partly decayed. :x

Given that the only way for undead to exist in Arcanum is for someone to raise them, you'd have to obey that person. Kind of defeats the purpose of the words "role playing" if you logically aren't in control of your character...

The game could still be a role playing game.
It could have a bit different story line at the beginning of the game it shows you as what ever race you choice to be with a Necromancer follower adventuring the world when you are both attacked by a bunch of enermys.
They all attack you and you last for a bit of time and almost win but you end up being killed and your Necromancer follower manages to scare them off by making all the died enermys zombies and gets them to chase them away.
Your necromancer follow then brings you back to life but you are now Undead.
Then the Necromancer follow tells you what happened and joins you
the story line could be that you are trying to turn everyone in arcanum into undead you can get extra followers by killing people then making them into undead. :D

That's the dumbest idea I've ever heard. It's not even remotely plausible - if the necromancer is that powerful, why hasn't he created an undead army himself? Besides, why would he follow someone over who he has complete control? Never mind the fact that 90% of the undead are mindless.

You could kill him after he raises you from being dead and then make him undead as well and then you would be in control. :x
of coarse after he tells you what happened :D

    Hehe

Ever use a necromizer? It's awesome. Although it only lasts a short while and it goes away if you sleep or wait, I like it. If you have the technological savvy, I highly recommend bringing along some necromizers. You can get your undead minion to actually CARRY things! How COOL is THAT?! In fact, you can make it wear armour if applicable. You could even have it carry your necromizers for you so you could just raise it whenever you need it. Necromizers are the best choice for the aspiring technologist necromancer. (the only choice, in fact)

It would be cool if the undead followers could hold your items for you.
You could make anyone or anything your follower.

You would be controlling yourself so you would not be mindless.
the only reason most undead are mindless is because someone else is controling them.
Undead could have low intelligence to start off with 4 as the lowest.
But they get high Willpower to start off with.

    And a high healing rate.

The problem is that, in most games, they are slow, so maybe a reduced speed, but high strength.

    Naturally, a low beauty too.
Unless they suddenly implement beautiful scantily clad female vampires like in some RPGs.

That brings up yet another sucky point.

EVERYONE kills undead on sight. Good, Neutral or Evil alike. It would suck balls if you had to play the entire game being attacked on sight by every NPC in the game and you wouldn't be able to train, trade etc. at all. You would be universally hated and thus because of all the killing you could only play as completely evil.

Of course, Necromancers might not attack you, but then they'd just dominate you on sight and you'd end up a mindless slave.

I have to agree with Jar on this one, that it's probably the worst idea for a new race I've come across.

My point is that its an idea that no one posted here and there are already undead in this game if people were more open minded they would see its a good idea.
they would not make people attack straight away only about -5 to reation not -100 to reation.
I am saying the story is like you only just died you would not be completly rotten like the Zombies that necromancers dig up in the graveyard and then bring the to life.

And you could say being brought back to life quick enough and it stops the rotting or you did not have enough time to rot because you were brought back to life straight away as undead.

You on the other hand seem to be so open-minded your brain has fallen out, as the saying goes.

Since nobody that I've seen has suggested this either: I want to play as a conjured fire elemental that has broken free of its summoner! Wouldn't that be, like, kewl? And add to replayability? And stuff? No? Stop being so negative and close-minded!

Undead have been used as race in a lot of games.
it is not just my idea so if you say stuff about it being a stupid idea you are also saying it about them and many people who play undead in many other games.

Oh stop being childish. At the very least, go away and don't come back until you finish puberty.

It's like when somebody says, "Well if they had criticized Bill Gates, they wouldn't have gotten the wonderful gift of Windows!" You are yourself, not anyone else, certainly not a professional game designer or fantasy writer. You are repeatedly given reason after reason why your ideas would not work in Arcanum, and all you can do in response is call people close-minded and unimaginative. "Well they had Jedi in this other kewl game I played, why not in Arcanum!" Just shut up.

As for the other games, please describe them in detail instead of just saying they exist. Tell us why an idea from another fantasy setting would work in Arcanum, especially in light of all you have been told here. Read a book or two on critical thinking while you're at it, it might improve your arguments.

(I have a funny feeling that I'm going to be nailed with a picture of a tampon as a punishment avatar one of these days.)

lol you read books about critical thinking now thats just too much

Ok now Undead have always been an evil race which is exactly what Arcanum needs there is hardy any evil followers in arcanum and heaps of good followers and another problem with Undead in Arcanum is that they are just treated like a mindless summoned race which is why this sounds like a stupid idea.

How dare you compare a race in Arcanum with a reason like lets have Jedi knights as well as a negitive response Undead are already a race they are just not playable unlike your Jedi response. :x

The good thing about having new races in games which have races is because when they come into the game as a race they bring with them another storyline into the game for example Undead could be is that they are plague that goes around attacking towns killing people and bring them back as undead and a quest could be that you have to stop them from turning Arcanum into a land of the Undead.
Race ideas do not have to be for playable races and you have given suggests why they should not be playable but because it is just a game not real life it is possible.

The Undead's number's could grow to such a large number that one race cannot beat there self maybe all the other race's would have to join forces to stop the Undead from making arcanum a place of undeath.

maybe you are only half-dead therefore retaining living tissues and most people can't recognise you. or maybe you start off in a undead-tolerant country, like the kingdom of nekross (sp?) in heroes 4. then as you make a name for yourself as a force of good, people start to tolerate you, like drizzt

Perhaps you could indeed do with reading one or two. It's all about creating a better mindset and more agile mind.

There are already loads of 'evil' races.

There are an equal number more or less of good and evil followers. Some are more evil than others and some are more good than others. You obviously just haven't found them all yet.

Good point. I like this way you've got of stating things to back up your arguement, but the things you state go against your arguement. Undead ARE a summoned race in Arcanum, and they ARE a mindless race in Arcanum. And you're right. It DOES sound like a stupid idea because it is.

You can't just change a game universe just to suit your whims. What next? Ogres are infact just super-intelligent worms in power armour and it's just that noone ever noticed before?

He was using it as an example of changing the game universe just to wuit your whims, rather than introducing a new race. They're both just as stupid though. His point was that undead are non-playable for a reason.

OK, but you couldn't play them still. For two reasons. One, they'd still be mindless zombies - not much fun to play. And the second point is something you just brought up yourself. "...and a quest could be that you have to stop them from turning Arcanum into a land of the Undead."

Great! You have to go on a quest to kill yourself! Sounds like even more fun!

It's not a new race that's in question. First of all, they already exist in Arcanum and thus they are not a new race and secondly, it was just your idea of making them playable that was in question. Try not to argue things that you haven't actually stated yourself since this piece of text backs Canis up more than yourself.

Again, how does playing an undead make this even likely to happen? This is fine for a quest or story idea but it bears absolutely no relavence at all to the debate in hand. Try to stay on topic at least when you're trying to debate something.
