Okay, we don't let not being rich stop us from thinking what we'd do if we were. Similarly, if someone were to build one of the sites in the the poll, which would you prefer?

    Guide to answering
It's a relative question. If you are extremely unlikely to use any of the sites, but marginally pre-disposed towards one of them, please pick that one.

If you are absolutely sure there is no chance of you ever using any of them, please exit the thread quietly. I live in denial about failure.

The are no invisible superlatives in the questions. Please don't insert you're own, so that you end up saying "I'd rather have a good ... site over a bad ... site." Assume any of them would be done reasonably well.

If you're tied for an answer, go away and have a think about it. There's a preference in that head of yours somewhere. Try sitting on a column of rock in the desert for a while, if it helps. Make sure it has an internet connection, though.

Thanks for anyone who refrains from shitting in my thread.

I voted "A modding site". It depends on the game, though.

I was tempted to vote for one of the fiction ideas, but the fan-fiction sort of threw me off. I haven't gotten into reading fan add-ons to established stuff. I haven't read enough of the good stuff to appreciate it, I guess. When I hear fan-fiction, I think two page erotic stories where T'Pol gets it on with Worf and Luke Skywalker, or a "Final Fantasy 7.5: The Tales Within" type of thing.

A fiction, or even a non-fiction "articles" type page I would visit, probably frequently. One site that I've recently been turned on to¹ is a good example of what I'm talking about. This site (www.kuro5hin.org) is only user submitted articles as far as I can tell, all of them op-eds/rants/observations. If your site had not only these but also original fiction, poems, song lyrics, whatever, I'd be there.

¹By this 4 part series, btw. Check it out if you have time, it's an interesting read

    loooooooooooooooooooooo!!!

Okay, I'm done with that now. Welcome back.

I voted for fan-fiction on computer games, simply because I quite liked the RP forum here for a while. Am I also wrong in assuming that these would be pay sites or not? If it is, then I don't choose any, because the only thing I'd think about paying for is porn. Did I say porn? I mean high-quality gaming sites such as Gamespot and IGN Insider.

I agree with Milo¹. I voted modding site. Depends on what game. Fallout/Arcanum I'd be into. Anything else.... Not really interested in. X-Com perhaps... Already sites for that though.

¹I did think of quoting Milo and using a nodding smiley but thought the intention of my post might come across all wrong.

Sorry, but this is the second time in a row I don't understand what you're talking about... are fees for modding/fanfic/etc sites that high?

Are you talking to me, tzehoong? If so, what on earth do you mean? I don't recall mentioning fees ... oh! Hang on. Please ignore the "if I were a rich man" stuff at the start. I suppose humour really is turning out to be cultural (and equally apparently, I exist in a culture of my own, these days).

Thanks, Threedogs, for getting the ball rolling. I appreciate it.

Thanks everyone else, for your very useful comments (except Ioo, but thanks for turning up and looking confused, anyway).

    Some points of clarification:

    1) I have enough trouble making money from the web through a full-time, paid job. I'm not delusional enough to imagine that I'd be able to make money from running a website. My ideas are strictly free content.

    2) I put the skinning and modding option in the test the water. My own preference is for fan-fiction, so I focused on that. If I hadn't sidelined the modding option, I'd have asked the same questions for it as I did for fan-fiction (ie. "Mods based on games, literature, or movies"). I wouldn't be too concerned out the game engine, at this point.

Milo, I haven't checked out that site, yet, but I will and I'll think about what you said.

    sheesh.

    Fanfic for computer gaming, definitely.

Movie fanfics? The only movie worthy of fan-ficking I can think of right now is Star Wars. And with all those Star Wars Universe books out on the market it's not really worth the trouble. Most movies nowadays are adapted from books anyway.

Sci-fi/fantasy fanfics? Don't read sci-fi. Fantasy fanfics, well. Maybe.

Fanfics for computer games would interest me more, primarily because games I loved (PS:T, BG, Quest4FGlory) will probably never have sequels (or already have too many). So I would like to create my own stories for them.

There is a lot of TV fan-fiction. Star Trek, Buffy and Xena all generate large amounts.

One of my concerns about computer game fan-fiction would be lack of depth. I'd be a little worried that the lack of depth in the settings and plots would translate to a lot of "I entered the dungeon, kicked some monster bottom, then went back to town" plots considered (by the authors) to be decent stories because the descriptive prose is imaginitive and well written. Actually, it's a bit of a concern about all fan-fiction, but more so, perhaps, for computer games.

I voted for a modding site. Fan-fiction is probably one of the scariest, geekiest and saddest thing about the internet. It's the kind of thing that could put potential internet users off completely. While it obviously gives a lot of people a lot of entertainment, if anyone ever admitted to such activities they would be laughed out of the pub. But they wouldn't be there in the first place anyway, I suppose... :)

Well, yes, I heartily agree, of course. You'd never get me to dabble with that kind of nerdy nonsense. The poll is hyperthetical ... er ... for my friend ... and he isn't really a friend, more of an acquiantence. I only bump into him every now and then, and I always make sure to let him know I won't put up with anything nerdy.

BTW, sorry I didn't make it to the pub to see your band. Would you believe, I completely forgot? (I was NOT sitting at home writing fan fiction).

[EDIT]Retard, sorry I failed to notice your earlier post. Thanks for the 2 cents. It all goes in the jar.

Fan fiction about fantasy/sci-fi I think. Those just interest me and it's the closest thing to RPG site while still it includes a possibility of a books dedicated forum. Besides I watch almost no TV and I don't do mods/skins. I also don't play enough to make a game dedicated site - it'd be outdated even before it would came to be.

BTW Sheriff is it just my impression or are you using us poor souls again to make yet another report for your boss just before deadline?* ;)

Oh no, this one is for me. I've been trying to work out which way to go when building my own site. I want to build a literature focused site, but I'm trying to work out some of the other possible angles before I commit.

You're the second person other than myself to actually vote for the option I wanted. Naturally, I'm bearing in mind that I'm asking a bunch of computer games players this question, but it's still relevant, since the users of this forum are the type of people I'd like to attract to see using my site.

No, but with a bit more effort on my part, you might get that book site you were interested in :)

After I submit that post I wondered who'd be the first one to come up with that line. I couldn't right "donut" though as there's no chance Sheriff would ever share one with anyone.
