    I suppose there is a direct link:

    The olfactory bulb of the brain (smelling area) protrudes into the nasal cavity, with only a very thin layer of protection, including the blood/brain barrier (hence it's so easy to kill yourself with a pencil up your nose). Your nasal cavity is directly connected to you sinuses and then your Buccal cavity (the bit most people mistakenly call 'the mouth', which is infact, just the muscular sphincter). Your buccal cavity, as you may well know, leads directly down your oesophagus into your alimentary canal (ie. digestive tract).

    AS for the gerbil-eating brain bit. That only happens in bad B movies, sorry! :wink:
