Just to give a final answer for this thread:
    http://terra-arcanum.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=15932

I just managed to retain Dante playing with the UAP. When I went to return the taxes I had him wait outside the castle all together while I talked to the king, and the give-Dante-credit dialog never came up, and I did ask for 'more than 200' as well. When I went back to Dante and went into the "I'd like you to do something for me" dialog I asked him to rejoin and he did.

    HOWEVER

He's not counting as a free follower for me. So, yup, he's basically just a more spell heavy Virgil without any of the plot fluff.

My guy has a int of 12, cha 18 and maxed out persuasion/expert.

I wonder though, has anyone had more than six followers? If Dante was free that would allow me to have seven followers (5 followers from cha, dog and Dante). I'm just wondering if there's some kind of hard cap in the game and its not letting him join because of that.

Dante is not a free follower for me when I am doing the quest (with latest UAP). He will complain about a full party.

Just wondering, how are you getting that? Short of a cha of 20 giving 6 followers (it might, never had a cha of 20 before) and dog being free, I specifically remember when I got persuasion expert it only boosted my max follower number by 1, not 2 like the manual says. Maybe my game is bugged.

Manual says one from expert persuasion.

The manual available through this site doesn't, so I guess its a misprint there:

I once had a character with Jayna, Magnus and about 20 automatons. I have crushed you with my e-peen.

What is there to be explained? Seven followers: 5 from 20 charisma, +1 from expert persuasion, + Dog, since he's a free follower after all.

That's what I was wondering, haven't tried to hit 20 on cha before so I didn't know if it opened up another follower slot.

I'm playing vanilla Arcanum with the 1.07.4 patch.

In my current game, I have nine followers: five from maxed out charisma, one from being an expert in persuasion, Dante, Jormund and Dog.

If you already have The Dog in your party and you want another person to join(not a free one), but your follower limit is full, then disband the dog,
(make it leave) quickly get another follower and get the dog back before it leaves ;)
And whola you got an extra follower !

I should note that making people wait used to drop them from max. followers in Vanilla Arcanum.

That still works in the UAP, they just won't rejoin until you tell someone else to wait.

Jormund counts as a free follower? I wonder if that got fixed in the UAP so that he counts as normal (like Dante being free appears to have been)

Jormund is no longer a free follower in the UAP.

Just so you know, the way flyingmonkey responded to the previous thread is the approved method of grave digging. It's in the FAQ's.

In the FAQ rules stands that it is sometimes justified, if and only if it is a good distribution to a topic.

Yeah, as I know, contributions to the topic aren't classified as gravedigs too.

By the way, who was Jormund?

Jormund is a rather special dwarf, being skilled in Magick. He is trapped in a rather bad internship under an unpleasant mage. Once you solve this problem he will join you. He puts his efforts into Fire (Mastery), Force (Mastery). He has a very high Constitution so spell casting is less of a problem. Here is a picture of his stats:
