New to Arcanum and looking at mods

Hello all.
I have recently bought arcanum from a nice little bargin bin.
and am wondering are there any essential mods that I need to install.
unofficial patches etc.

I am computer savvy so am not to bother with complex installations just need pointing in the right direction.

 

Play it plain, then use Drog's Unofficial Patch, and then try Rroyo's AWIP. Trust me, you'll appreciate the second two far more if you've played it Vanilla.

(P.S. Love the nickname. Are you a Red Wizard yet, or are you still working your way through the ranks? Heh...)

Well, it doesn't hurt, but truth told I haven't actually made it to Roseborough m'self. I want to, though, so bad... I'm working on a merchant-mage type right now.

Yes the Name does relate to red wizars had it ever since the creation of the Greatest NPC ever (there just jealous arn't they my pet)

in fact thinking of that I should update my avatar

Also is ther a mod or way to change the picture for your character?

Yep Baldurs Gate had some awesome characters. even helped with a mod for it once.

 

BTT: no, Drog's UAP and rroyo's A:WIP are NOT compatible. you install the official patch to 1.074 and then either UAP or A:WIP.
UAP is, as the name suggests, a patch, not a mod. it makes the game like it was intended to be
rroyo's A:WIP is a major mod, adding and modifying content, it contains a large number of bugfixes as well.
your character's looks are defined by size (minute/regular/large race), gender and armor worn. in combat you also get to see weaponry
and AFAIK you need either a save editor or some modding to change the portraits.

I'd recommend Vanilla Arcanum (that is, patched to the newest version) first, but I couldn't really tell you why. Drog's Unofficial Patch really fixes up the game very nicely, and is simply awesome. I think you'd get a much better appreciation for the fixes if you'd played Vanilla Arcanum first, but I'm not sure how necessary it is, really.

I guess a favorable metaphor is along the lines of me recommending you eat a shit sandwich before you eat a delicious ham sandwich, just so you can appreciate how good the ham sandwich is.

Sure, you'll notice the difference, but you still were eating shit at first.

Bottom line: I vote you try a fully patched game with Drog Unofficial patch first, and then try the Rroyo's A:WIP later, as the additional content in that game is more of an (awesome) mod than a patch.

 

NEAT! I tried to write a mod for it once, I had all the dialogue and stuff only to discover that my coding abilities were shit-tastic. And as I was internetless at the time... Now I have the ability, but not the time or the dialogue. *grumble*

 

I never bothered with Edwin. He just... annoyed me. I usually went the cheater route, and made a fully party for myself.

 

Edwin = Most Powerful Mage In The Game, And That Includes Min-Maxed Player Characters. It's that pendant of his.

 

have you tried the edwin romance mod, not my cup of tea, but some people like it.
The mod I assisted with was an obscure one called 'Silverstar'

 

I have played the Edwin Romance several times. *snicker* Having met his family assassin, I can see where he gets it from. *cackles like a lunatic*

 

Install Arcanum -> Official Patch 1074 -> Latest unofficial patch+extras.

After that, play A:WIP then Car-Arcanum.
